I'm particularly interested in the one-vote wonders, particularly since a few of them appeared to occupy the #1 slot of individual lists (assuming they were rank ordered- I recall Art Brut topping a list, but it may have been alphabetical) One top listing that piqued my interest (and that I'm certain wasn't alphabetical) is the Verlaines. I didn't realize they had a new release in 07, don't see it on emusic (or any Verlaines, for that matter). Is it NZ-only? Can the voter (or someone in the know) enlighten me? Thanks. BTW- I very nearly included Les Savy Fav, Panda Bear and Menomena on my list (each in the not-quite-top-ten-Honorable Mention category- I only listed 14 titles) so if you want to mentally promote those to 2, 2, and 3 votes, by all means do. In each case I thought they had great sounds but lacked the start-to-finish enjoyment of a true top-drawer album. For Panda Bear in particular, in my extended writeup I noted that if I could add its two 12-minute epics to the Animal Collective record (which I already liked better than the rest of you) I'd have bumped that one up from its #6 slot. So what's your all-metal ballot, then? I only heard four new metal albums this year, and probably only like one of them (Serj Tankian's), so I'm wide open to suggestions. I'm glad you're still a Tori loyalist, at a time when she's shedding so many fans; there was a brief period (VENUS ORBITING and STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS) where I thought she might be losing me, but since then I'm right back to loving every album she makes, and DOLL POSSE would certainly have been in my top-12 ballot if people averaged six fingers per hand and we did ballots that way. My top-10 list tipped my (surprised/delighted) opinions of the new Maria McKee and Rasputina albums, but what did you make of them? I wouldn't know who McKee was if it weren't for you, so I'm hoping you're still happy with her... cheers, - Brian Care2 make the world greener! http://toolbar.Care2.com Make your computer carbon-neutral (free). http://www.Care2.com Green Living, Human Rights and more - 7 million members! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2008 10:34:31 EST From: GlenSarvad@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] Verlaines First off, many thanks of course to glenn for taking on the poll compilation task. Eastern Standard Time, ggilray@yahoo.com writes: In the latest Ask Scott, he says this: "I'm starting to think about doing an album again, but I'm pretty prepared for it to be one of those situations where when it actually comes out, a lot of people who thought they were going to care really don't because the community that used to be available to share the interest has moved on. Of course, there's the internet now, so you never know." Not sure what he really means here, but I certainly would love to hear a new album. Gil They way I interpret this, Gil, is Scott is saying that his fan base has grown up and most of the more casual fans (not us who remain here) have jumped off the train--trading their musical passions for careers and kids (Scott himself has little time for music because of his own career)--so when the record comes out that a 32-year-old fan was excited about in 2000, the 41-year-old may not care, as he just simply doesn't have the time to--or his interests and priorities have changed (41-year-olds and 32-year-olds are in different de mographics for a actuary-like calculated reason). The clubs that once held Scott's initial audience are filled with people young enough to be his original fans' children--and they are more interested in the latest "Saw" sequel and Fall Out Boy download (bitter fogey ranting on my part?). But, he's realizing the YouTube/MySpace outlets could actually make a ripple for him--Scott could have a song or vid that could go viral on YouTube or MySpace--you never know. There is that Scott-sets-himself-aflame-one-show-only trick that I once mentioned he should try with New Yorkers. - --Mark **************Start the year off right.
