Don't Have/Haven't Listened To Enough Yet: Krauss/Plant, Dean & Britta, Radiohead, Shalini, Ian Hunter, Okkervil River, Sloan, White Stripes, David Childers, Black Francis 2008 Preseason Favorite: Goldfrapp - 7th Tree later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 10:31:51 -0500 From: "Dave Walker" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Best of 2007 Albums 1. LCD Soundsystem: The Sound of Silver Pretty close to flawless, IMO. A through rebuke to the notion that dance music is incapable of conveying nuance and emotion. 2. Burial: Untrue No hint of a sophomore slump in the house. Builds haunted cathedrals of reverb with unnerving vocal snatches and hypnotically complex syncopated rhythms. 3. Glenn Mercer: Wheels In Motion Someone on this list described this as the best Feelies-related release since "Time For A Witness" came out 15 years ago, and I'd have to agree. It's so great to have him back. Somebody get Bill Million away from Disneyworld. 4. The Sea And Cake: Everybody Surprisingly, pretty much a straight pop album, but a very good one. 5. Amon Tobin: Foley Room Finally getting to do the actual soundtrack work it was clear he always wanted to be doing (e.g. Splinter Cell) seems to have liberated Tobin sonically. 6. Pole: Steingarten German electronic music with a sense of humor(!) and some really, really nice basslines. :) 7. Battles: Mirrored More of an album to admire than to love, maybe, but prog (heh) hasn't sounded this relevant in years. 8. Deerhunter: Cryptograms Maybe the most "difficult" album on this list -- it took me many listens to puzzle out the internal logic of this record. Worth the effort, though. 9. Peter Bjorn and John: Writer's Block Pure Beatlesque pop with hooks to spare. 10. Kiln: Dusker It turns out that someone else fully internalized the records Mouse on Mars made on Sonig in the mid to late 90s. Dubby, abstract ambience integrated with cool little implied melodies and quirky squiggles. Honorable mentions Arcade Fire: Neon Bible Radiohead: In Rainbows Spoon: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga Trans Am: Sex Change Caribou: Andorra Pinch: Underwater Dancehall Songs 1. Fallen Snow - Au Revoir Simone Beautiful, dare I say even adorable. Hits a melancholy yet upbeat tone perfectly. 2. Someone Great - LCD Soundsystem One of the purest, most honest songs about loss I've ever heard. 3. Conspiracy of the Gods - Trans Am Conspiracy of the *Rawk* Gods, that is. The developers behind "Rock Band" need to license this track NOW. 4. Atlas - Battles Ridiculous laptop'ed chipmunk vocals with a riff and precision drumming that could destroy buildings. My idea of a great Friday night. 5. Lake Michigan - Rogue Wave I'm a sucker for indie rock waltzes, what can I say? 6. Ghost Hardware - Burial As good an example of any of what makes Burial so special. 7. Back In Your Head - Tegan and Sara Catchy as hell. The missus and I bop along like idiots whenever this plays on the radio. 8. Young Folks - Peter Bjorn and John (whistles happily) 9. The News - Carbon/Silicon Mick Jones still knows his way around a great hook. 10. Now Now - St. Vincent A weird little ball of Kate Bush-esque chaos with a killer guitar solo at the end. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 14:22:19 -0500 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: [loud-fans] 1/10: 2007 LoudFans poll closes at midnight! I've just got more music than I have time to comfortably listen to it. Some of these that ended up on the final list I only listened to once or twice. And as usual there's a whole lot of stuff I either own and haven't listened to yet, or that I've don't own and need to hear. I'm sure there are a lot of albums that would've ended up on this list if I had listened to them more than once. But them's the breaks. 1. Voxtrot - s/t 2. Mitch Easter - DYNAMICO 3. New Pornographers - CHALLENGERS 4. Shalini - THE SURFACE AND THE SHINE 5. Maximo Park - OUR EARTHLY PLEASURES 6. Kaiser Chiefs - YOURS TRULY, THE ANGRY MOB 7. Ted Leo - LIVING WITH THE LIVING 8. Immaculate Machine - FABLES 9. Midlake - THE TRIALS OF VAN OCCUPANTHER 10. Shout Out Louds - OUR ILL WILL Bubbling under/honorable mentions (possibly in some kind of order): Interpol - OUR LOVE TO ADMIRE Hot Hot Heat - HAPPINESS LTD They Might Be Giants - THE ELSE Hail Social - MODERN LOVE AND DEATH Bloc Party - A WEEKEND IN THE CITY Starflyer 59 - MY ISLAND The Long Blondes - SOMEONE TO DRIVE YOU HOME The Editors - AN END HAS A START Polyphonic Spree - THE FRAGILE ARMY Stars - IN OUR BEDROOM AFTER THE WAR Arcade Fire - NEON BIBLE The National - BOXER Get Him Eat Him - ARMS DOWN Black Francis - BLUEFINGER Okkervil River - THE STAGE NAMES Hallelujah the Hills - COLLECTIVE PSYCHOSIS BEGONE Broken West - I CAN'T GO ON I'LL GO ON Of Montreal - HISSING FAUNA, ARE YOU THE DESTROYER? Shake Some Action! - s/t She Wants Revenge - THIS IS FOREVER And a million other things I've forgotten... Really didn't like The Shins WINCING THE NIGHT AWAY. For some reason, it actually made me MAD. No order intended: Beirut - The Flying Club Cup Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? Okkervil River - The Stage Names Emma Pollock - Watch the Fireworks Frank and Walters - A Renewed Interest in Happiness Radiohead: In Rainbows Stars - In Our Bedroom after the War Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters Once - -- Notes: "Once" wouldn't have made it on the music alone, but I adored the movie. If I were to start my picking over, I could have ended up with Low, M.I.A., Electralane, The Shins, The New Pornographers, Panda Bear, Caribou, or Clientele in the above list. My disappointments of the year were Architecture in Helsinki, Ted Leo, and Iron and Wine. Battles is the band with high critical praise that I just do not understand. While I'm sticking to my plan of buying two CDs from bands I do not know for every three from bands I do know, I really ought to play the sound samples first.
