Faye and I are friends and we see each other now and then. I last saw her at a Shalini show in Winston-Salem back in October. She lives west of Winston-Salem and takes care of her ailing parents. She doesn't perform anymore, she doesn't even own a bas anymore last I heard, although Shalini did coax her out into one show when the Mitch Easter tribute album came out a few years ago. Faye works as a proofreader for various book publishers. He really seems to have a grasp of where music distribution is going; it seems the more artists realize that it's no longer in their interests to sign on the dotted line for the man, the more they will explore the new options available to them, and the faster the musical-industrial complex will crumble. Of course, I'm sure that won't stop them from filing some massive class-action lawsuit against every citizen in America for not letting them rape us with their high prices and crummy "product" (formerly music). Think of it as the last reflexive sting of the scorpion as it dies. By the way, just out of curio city, did anyone see the Kennedy Center Honors thingy last week? I did, since three of my heroes (Martin Scorsese, Steve Martin, Brian Wilson) were among the honorees. Man, Wilson looked stiff. I know he doesn't really like these things, so I'm not going to give him a hard time about it -- I just felt bad for him. He just sat there with his wife behind him, never moving, never even applauding -- he did muster up a little enthusiasm for the tribute to Diana Ross, who was seated beside him -- but wow, when Hootie and the Blowfish (of all people) started cranking out some Beach Boys tunes, the whole place came alive! Everybody got on their feet, dancing and clapping and singing along... and when that boys choir from London sang a really lovely arrangement of "Love And Mercy", THAT moved him. You could tell. It moved everyone. What a gift, to be able to affect a whole room full of people like that. I really hope that made the night worthwhile for him. At first, it seemed generic, but I'm liking her material more and more.? It kind of sounds like Suzanna Hoffs, Natalie Merchant, Lisa Loeb--maybe some Dar Williams in there as well, with just a hint of Josie Cotton's New Wave era LA pop flavor (on the song "La").? I think he saw her out here and bought her albums, TULIPS BLEED and MAKE TOMORROW UP at a show, so I'm not sure of her material's availability, but, it's pretty good as it steeps in your brain.? Not earth shattering, but certainly better than sitting through a performance of?"Wicked" (but, Carol Kane was good in her role, and the Art Deco Pantages Theatre is sublime).? The disturbingly old?looking emaciated pre-teen girl outside the Pantages Theatre fronting a band of teenage boys singing "Sweet Home Alabama" on Hollywood Blvd. was a better?value entertainment wise, though she looked as if she'd lived 40 years in 10. - --Mark ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever.
