For those of you who care, I now have a more normal blog, (than the MySpace blog which I will continue to go through my musical history on). The new one is here, and I apologize in advance for not knowing how to work properly, but I suppose that will happen with time! http://pobuck.blogspot.com/ Thanks! I heard that tv will go completely digital by 2009. If that's the case, then people with older sets get a converter box, right? I don't watch tv enough to justify buying a new tv--in fact, I plugged my modem cable into my tv for the first time in months yesterday, channel surfed for about an hour, and switched it off. If I plug said cable into the back of my tv, do I still have to get some sort of converter? If so, what is the cost of these? I'd like to still be able to use my tv, even if I watch it maybe three or four time a year. Thanks, - --Mark, who needs to check out Stars--Jen asked me if I'd heard 'em, but I told her I hadn't--but if they cover "Cattle and Cane," I must hear them immediately "She's weird." (Also, I'm going high-deaf early next year, and I wanna make sure I get the most bang for my buck.) The issue as you understand it is how I understood it as well, but now it appears that if you are getting your television transmissions from cable or satellite, you'll be A-OK without a converter. Here is a quote from a recent article on Variety's website: "According to the CEA [Consumer Electronics Association], household penetration of digital TV will hit 67% by the end of next year, when analog broadcast signals are shut down. "That doesnt mean the rest of TV owners will be affected, however; cable and satellite users wont see a disruption in service, even if they only own analog TVs. And a percentage of viewers who only watch over-the-air TV may purchase or already own a digital set. "For the remaining few, converter boxes (around $60 a pop) are available; and starting in January, consumers can apply for two $40 rebates to be used toward the purchase of one. Congress has allocated $990 million to the program." So, if you're using cable for your occasional televisual expeditions, it looks like you're in good shape; even if you aren't, the government appears quite happy to throw away a billion smackeroonies on those couch potatoes who want their five hours of pop-culture cattlegunning without actually joining the 21st century, so you can always get in on that action. (Incidentally, a recent study by the Shiny Objects Institute discovered that 97% of those converter boxes will be placed on top of televisions that are themselves on top of other, non-working, televisions.) Now here's what I wanna know: I've heard that the frequencies on which analog TV is currently transmitted will, after the digital transition, be sold to telecommunications corporations for use with cellphones; does this mean that we can then simply fiddle with the rabbit-ears antenna on an unconverted analog TV and listen in on nearby phone calls? Unlike Robert Pollard, I am not a scientist, so I have no idea. I suspect old televisions will not be used for eavesdropping, but it's encouraging to know that I may be starting a new conspiracy theory. You heard it here first!
