It was a real thrill to play with Scott and Statuesque and I hope we can do it again sometime. It should be pointed out that Gil's two song live debut as a singer/songwriter was fantastic. He was also the only one who made a point of playing wedding-appropriate songs, which was very cute. I should also mention that Scott wasn't just a guest musician, he was the officiant at the wedding! With a Universal Life Church membership in hand, he gave a beautiful Rene Girard/Gil Bailie-inspired speech and did all the proper ring exchanging/you-may-kiss-the-bride stuff that officiants get to do. He was fantastic--it was really moving to have him up there with us. His daughter Valerie was one of the flower girls as well. Good stuff. As I try to rejoin the regular world after months of wedding planning, I want to mention a few of the many new releases that are really fantastic (or at least, quite good): Richard Hawley's latest is in the "fantastic" category--no radical departures, but if you can believe it, his singing is even more stunning on this new one. The Thurston Moore album is really wonderful--the songs are good and it's nice to hear him playing acoustic guitar. Cass McCombs has traded the haunted 80's sound of PREfection for a kind of 70's singer/songwriter vibe. It doesn't all quite work, but the best bits are great. I'm surprised by how much I really like the new Springsteen. He's remembered how to sing, and the return to the big, groovy E Street jangle is refreshing. Check out "Girls In Their Summer Clothes". Thanks god he's gotten over the Pete Seeger crap! xo, B ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #239 *******************************
