I found that it peaked at #9 in June of 1973 and got no higher. Then I noticed what else charted around the time it peaked. I was 10 years old in 1973, but I was aware enough that these songs were HUGE: Indeed, he was up against some serious competition, which included -- all in the same week, and in no particular order -- "My Love" by Paul McCartney; "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter; "Yesterday Once More" by the Carpenters; "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" by Dawn; "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" by George Harrisson; "I'm a Stranger Here" by 5-Man Electrical Band; "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealer's Wheel; "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Stevie Wonder; "Cisco Kid" by War; "Space Oddity" by David Bowie; "Walk On The Wild Side" by Lou Reed; "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray; "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon; "Daniel" by Elton John; "The Farmer's Song" by Murray McLaughlin; "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple; "Leroy Brown" by Jim Croce; "Shambala" by Three Dog Night. Ref: http://www.webfitz.com/lyrics/Charts/1973/Ch197306.html Tarry was a one-hit wonder; and debuted with that hit. The song stuck in my mind and became one of those songs that I wanted to hear more of, but dropped from the charts far too soon. And at the time, I knew neither the title nor the artist. Hate it when that happens. But charting briefly and dropping out seems to be something to be taken in context. With competition like that above, even a small success for a new artist is something big. But this makes another point for me. I understand the record companies are complaining that people are not buying enough records these days, and they are blaming piracy for the crisis. I am of the opinion that the record industry -- which I am defining as the big record labels -- is suffering more because they are not investing enough in new and existing talent. The songs in the above list all charted the same week. If they were able to produce talent that would have made a chart like that above, I don't think they would complain so loudly. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2007 16:54:58 -0800 From: "Daniel Vallor" Subject: [loud-fans] Chicago. etc Hello Loud List- I will be traveling in Chicago later this year and wanted to ask if anyone would consider letting me know fine record stores and venues (and restaurants if you have a favorite) in the Chicago area. We will be staying in the River North neighborhood, just above the Loop neighborhood (I really don't know Chicage well). I will be glad to travel around town though for cool shops. Off list responses would be appreciated, I promise I am not one who cleans out stores of their cool stock. Also, sorry for the cross posted intrusion and plug (I have tailored this not for a few lists), but in order to partially fund this excursion, I have some stuff on eBay that ends on Tuesday Oct 2nd. My copy of Maple Music says that the song never charted on Billboard, which is the only foreign list mentioned. So, it would seem that this was only a hit in Canada. It was on Reprise, which may have already merged with Warner-Elektra by that time. Maybe someone else knows better on this list. > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqJ3Hp0s_gk > Holy cow! What _isn't_ on YouTube? Thanks for the link. At least now I have a crappy sounding version to remember the tune with. Hearing it now for some reason, I don't feel as enamoured about it as I used to. Michael Tarry McDermott, according to one bio I read, was born in England (Manchester), and moved to Ontario in the late '60s. His stage name is Michael Tarry, and he now apparently lives in an obscure town called Marmora, Ontario, about halfway between Toronto and Ottawa, as the crow flies. > At first I thought you were talking about that Flying Machine song "Smile > a Little Smile for Me," which I love. - Dan And that is one that I don't recall.
