The music, it's true, shimmers and twangs in line with Moore's Hawai'ian childhood, but that competence, juxtaposed with prickles, carries the day. I'm putting it on the short list for my 2007 Top Ten, along with Charlotte, Low, Fountains of Wayne, Stooges, and Kinski. Perhaps I shouldn't value PRELUDES, Warren Zevon's posthumous CD of demos, as much as I do--serious consideration for my 2007 Top Ten as well--and I certainly can't help comparing these versions to the ones that eventually appeared in his lifetime. But the six (out of sixteen) previously unreleased cuts make me wonder why (aside from general chaos) he passed them over, especially "Steady Rain," and "Studebaker," which breaks down just like the cranky car it describes. "Accidentally Like A Martyr" misses its 5/4 breakdown from EXCITABLE BOY, but startlingly enough works just as well with its old verses as with the newer ones I already knew. And who knew "Werewolves Of London" started out as genteel reggae (inspiring David Lindley's skaification on VERY GREASY?) with far more carnal shout-outs? So that gives me six, maybe seven, for 2007. I'll have another go at PWRFL POWER. The only ones I've heard enough to have formed a strong opinion of are the Clientele (still likely my #1 of the year, though it could well get knocked off) and the Paul McCartney (certainly his strongest album since at least TUG OF WAR, but...well, that's not really saying much, is it?). Other strong contenders: STICKING FINGERS INTO SOCKETS by Los Campesinos!, SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE by New Buffalo and POLYTHEISTIC FRAGMENTS by Sir Richard Bishop, out tomorrow on Drag City. We saw Bishop do a tremendous solo acoustic show in Toronto last week, opening for Bill Callahan, f.k.a. Smog. I was quite pleasantly surprised by Callahan's set: the small handful of Smog records I'd heard had led me to largely dismiss him as a junior-league Will Oldham. Turns out that he's actually exactly what Jandek would sound like if Jandek was interested in sounding normal.
