[West ANTHONY Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Fwd: [andrew-list] Andrew weekend in Los Angeles MUSIC First of all, Amoeba Records on Sunset rules. You can get lost in there all day with all of the goodies they have. In the Valley, there are two small indie stores worth looking into: CD Trader in Tarzana, and Freakbeat Records in Sherman Oaks. Both of them are on Ventura Boulevard. On the first Sunday of every month, there's the Pasadena City College Flea Market, which I've not yet been to (I'm going this Sunday!), but I've heard has an impressive selection of musical treasures. MOVIES Right across the street from Amoeba is the Arclight Cinemas, which encompasses the legendary Cinerama Dome. Hopefully, something not-crappy will be playing while you're here. The American Cinematheque is like a running film festival with different subjects each month; they show movies in the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard (which is considerably less icky than it used to be) and the Aero Theatre on Montana in Santa Monica. I mostly go to the Aero, because spending a day in Santa Monica is one of my favorite ways to relax. The New Beverly Cinema on (where else?) Beverly in Hollywood is, admittedly, a dingy hole, but a charmingly dingy hole, and the only permanent revival house left in this town. BOOKS The Iliad Bookstore recently moved to smaller digs on Cahuenga, but it's still the best used bookshop in the Valley. Brand Books in downtown Glendale is another good one. If your interests lean toward theatre, film and television, Samuel French has two -- count 'em, two! -- bookshops in Los Angeles County: one in Hollywood on Sunset, and another in Studio City in the Valley. The one on Sunset has a better selection. LOITERING When I was a teenager, Westwood Village used to be THE place to hang out -- book stores, record stores, restaurants, movies, the whole megillah. Now the place is not nearly as jumpin' as it used to be, but it's still nice. There's a cookie store across the street from the Village Theatre that has the MOST AWESOMEST cookies in town... and they're three for a dollar! You'll have to stand in line, but trust me, they're worth it. Nearby is Lamonica's Pizza, which is the best in that area; they say it's New York style, but until I get to New York, I won't really know for sure. All of the book stores and record stores are gone (they used to have a Tower Records that was THREE stories high...), although there's a Borders down the street, but still several theatres -- NOT multiplexes, either, but single theatres like mom used to make. The Village even has a balcony. It's one of the last genuine movie palaces in town. Westwood Village is conveniently located next to UCLA, so why not come by and hit on college students? The Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica is now the hip and happening spot; the place gets packed, so show up early and spend the day. Movies, food, a Borders AND a Barnes & Noble, an Apple store, a bloody great shopping mall, free wi-fi and numerous street performers (though I must admit the silver robot guy loses considerable mystique once you've seen him pulling into the parking garage behind the Promenade in a Toyota 2-door). Within walking distance of the Promenade is the Santa Monica Pier; they have a ferris wheel and a roller coaster and a merry-go-round and wickedly overpriced ice cream. Incidentally, this whole area was the site of the Legendary Hot Dog On A Stick Story. Not far from Santa Monica is Venice Beach. Whenever you see someone from out of town arrive at the beach in LA, it's usually Venice Beach you're seeing -- the girls in bikinis rollerblading down the bicycle path (hotcha!) and the wacky guy with the robes and the turban and the electric guitar who is also on rollerblades -- they're BOTH real, and they're both at Venice. While Third Street is more upscale and spiffy, the boardwalk at Venice is considerably funkier, with more of a swap meet vibe, and weirder street performers. CityWalk, in the Valley, is right next to Universal Studios; I haven't been there in a while, because to me the place always screamed "tourist trap", but I've heard that they spruced it up and it's a lot nicer now. Downtown Burbank is pretty cool, with some theatres and shops and restaurants. There's also Bob's Big Boy, which I love; there's only about three of them left in all of LA, and the one in Burbank is the best. On some Friday nights (or maybe EVERY Friday -- I'm not certain), they have classic cars in the parking lot. But who needs classic cars when you can go inside and enjoy a delicious hot fudge cake? Well, that's the stuff I like, anyway. Has anybody given you any other suggestons? Here's the story I just received: "Its a song we recorded in my room in '81 with Johnny Blazing on guitar. We gave the only copy of it to Rodney (Bingenheimer) and he played it more than once. It was before the New Alliance stuff was even recorded. Anyway, in 2002 (a friend of a friend) went on Napster and found the song listed with Three O'clock stuff, made me a disk and sure enough it was the same recording we gave to Rodney 21 years gone by {I have lost the disk]. Now a Three O' Clock Rarities disk is being put together and I would like to include this." Please contact me directly at tom.stevens15@verizon.net. Well, even though I've been told I don't look 40, The thought of hitting on a twenty year old would make me feel like I was trolling for children, because, technically, I'm old enough to have a freshman child in college, without being the age of a father in backwoods Appalachia. And, being of my orientation, there's that whole daddy/boy thing the weirds me out. Man, thanks so much for all this info! I'm going to print it out and save it and keep it with me on the trip. I took my mom's 100 dollar present and bought me a Samsung 6 megapixel digital camera for the trip (I've finally succumbed). Pretty soon, I'll be willingly sticking my wrist out for The Evil Empire to stick that chip in. A car dealer on Main Street in Alhambra has a giant multicolored sputnik on the roof; it's fairly impressive at night. As far as record stores go, I haven't been anywhere near LAX lately so I don't know if Soundsations is still there, but that's the only one in LA I really love these days (I know it's a minority opinion, but I can't stand Amoeba). On a completely unrelated but on-topic-ish note, my nearly-3-year-old son wants to listen to "One Will Be The Highway" over and over again. When he's not demanding to listen to Richard Thompson, I mean, which is most of the time. I don't know how this happened. I don't think I did it!
