I am not someone who cleans out record stores, so I will not be a threat to the local store stock. Sorry for any crosspostings you might notice and feel free to respond off list. From there, you can get to 3 good record stores in short walking distance. One is up Burnside a couple of blocks, very big, hard to miss (though I forget the name, maybe Everyday Music?). There's another smaller one right across from the Powell's entrance, but one that has a long history in the PDX music scene. Then around 8th or so, just south of Burnside is another music shop. Can't remember the names of any of these, but they're all less than 5 mins walk from Powell's. For venues, a larger venue that I like is Crystal Ballroom, which is on Burnside, right across from the Everyday Music (?) shop. It's an old swing-dance hall, so the floor rests on ball bearings, and bounces when you hop on it. There's a number of smaller venues in the club area which is the range of 2nd to 4th, just south of Burnside. Dante's has some good music. Satyricon is a venue that's been around forever for your heavy, death metal, industrial crowd. The venue I used to go to the most, Berbati's, is in this area. A new one which I've only been to once is Douglas Fir Lounge. It's on the east side, not really walkable from downtown, but is small venue with some good acts. Don't live in Portland anymore, sadly, but I still love it, and am happy to help as virtual tour guide! I thought Satyricon shut down a couple years ago. I saw a show there once. Bad neighborhood. All sorts of bad stuff going down around us. Best beer selection (try the Rogue YSB), amazing English pub food, premier league soccer on the TV--heaven. http://www.horsebrass.com/ B ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2007 07:39:11 +0100 From: "Angela Bennett & Ian Runeckles" Subject: RE: [loud-fans] Shopping in Portland, Seattle and British Columbia (Vanc & Vic) I bought a couple of things in Sonic Boom in Fremont, Seattle last year - Neko Case's album and a DVD about Townes Van Zandt I seem to remember - http://www.myspace.com/sonicboomvinylannex - it's a cool area, excellent bookshop nearby too with a resident cat which is always a sign of quality. If you can break yourself away from Sonic Boom the boat cruise around the lake is fun http://www.seattleferryservice.com/ Anyone heard the new New Pornographer's album yet? Out next week I think.
