But that's ok! Here's some stuff that has been on my little pea brain: Beach Boys - Stacey and I used to have a rule - I wouldn't play Beach Boy records and she wouldn't play opera records while we were at home at the same time. No problem, but of course I would cheat every now and then to try to prove to her that God Only Knows is the most beautiful song in the world. Eventually, she agreed that it was in fact beautiful, but she still couldn't handle their vocals. Something about the quality of some of the higher notes etc.... Imagine my surprise when recently, she brought home the 2-fer Sunflower & Surf's Up! My God, has the world gone mad? Nope, she got it basically for one song, and it's a song I have never heard before - Disney Girls. What an amazing song! Just gorgeous. I see that Bruce Johnston wrote it, but is that him singing it? Great vocal with a beautiful melody to go along with it. My favorite song at the moment. Both albums are pretty darn good, so big props to Stacey for bringing them into my life! I was jonesin' for some early Beach Boys and decided to get another 2-fer; Little Duece Coop and All Summer Long. Not much beauty here, but very enjoyable. Now for the bad Beach Boys moment. I tried as hard as I could to like Wilson's re-do of Smile, but eventually came to the conclusion that I absolutey HATE this cd. Yuck. God knows I tried, but the last time I gave it a listen, I almost threw it out the window of my car. Can't stand it. Maybe it's Van Dyke Parks...I dunno, but it's been a while since I've had such a violent reaction to a disc. I gave it to Stacey and asked her to trade it in at Amoeba and bring me Charlotte Gainsbourg's newest, and I'm loving it. Pretty durn laid back, but I think it's great (but please! She's so ...gorgeous, I wish there was a better photo of her on the cover!)I'm soooo..relieved to have Smile out of the house. Robert mentioned that Suzi Ziegler has emerged, and we had a great time writing and chatting on the phone. She's in Portland and seems to be doing well. She still looks fab, and hopefully, we can arrange a visit sometime in the near future. Welcome back Suzi! (such an underrated bass player and a great singer). Yea! Oh, one more thing - I really like the new Anton album which can be obtained through 125 Recs. Today I noticed that except for a few count offs and drum intros, Anton starts every song on this one with full on vocals. No instrumental intros - just voices. Neat! Oops, actually one more thing - for what its worth, I've been really enjoying writing songs and think I'll be recording soon. Keeps me off the streets. I do believe that's Bruce on lead vocals, but doing his best imitation of Brian's higher register. "Disney Girls" is quite possibly the best Brian Wilson song Brian Wilson never wrote. I was first introduced to it by one of my sisters when I was a little kid, through Art Garfunkel's cover on his album BREAKAWAY. It actually might be as good as the original (it's just made for his falsetto), if Stacey ever sees a reissue of that at Amoeba.
