World Cafe has pretty much become my source for new listening experiences (what's amazing is that, if David Dye drinks a glass of water, I'm still able to talk). I heard these both on WC, and I got that manic pop thrill, which doesn't come as often as it did when I was a young man. Mid Lake's THE TRIALS OF VAN OCCUPANTHER is incredibly good, and I see it in my year-end top ten (but it has a 2006 release date). It sounds kind of '70s, maybe a little Fleetwood Macish with a dab of Neil Young as a dipping sauce, but fortunately for those of us with ears, sans the trans fattish Stevie Nicks (I better watch it, she might put a spell on me and turn me into a Republican). Guster's GANGING UP ON THE SUN--I heard "Satellite" on World Cafe, and I thought it was an incredibly good, well-crafted song, and if you just hear this one song by them, I think you'll agree. Also, I was wondering if anyone has heard Allen Clapp's SOMETHING STRANGE HAPPENS: FOUR TRACK FORECASTS and what your thoughts of it were? Without the Orange Peels as his vehicle, he can be hit and miss (i.e. AVAILABLE LIGHT, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN). I have seen recent photos of him, and he's back to his Costelloish '60s NASA employee look, which suits him. - --Mark ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #157 *******************************
