I can remember buying a Stereolab album on Drag City (either SWITCHED ON VOL. 2 or ALUMINUM TUNES, my memory fails me now) that had these little glued-in cardboard type circles on top of the same cardboard type material that the cover was made out of, and the circles promptly fell off the backing, causing the discs to fall out repeatedly. My efforts to re-glue the circles were in vain. I'm all for artistic expression, but engineering and art need not be mutually exclusive. I'm guessing it will end up on my best of 07 list. However, my favorite album from emusic originating from the UK that I downloaded recently is "Lanzafame" by Tap Tap: http://www.emusic.com/album/Tap-Tap-Lanzafame-MP3-Download/11008261.html This record is a bit lo-fi, but it is probably my favorite emusic download of the year so far (even though I think it came out in 2005 or 2006). The samples are pretty indicative, so if you like "that kind of thing", you'll enjoy the record. Another one from the UK that I like, though not quite as much as the two above, is "Sing the Greys" by Frightened Rabbit: http://www.emusic.com/album/Frightened-Rabbit-Sing-the-Greys-MP3-Download/11004035.html Hopping continents to Australia, I've been enjoying "Mosaic" by Love of Diagrams. I caught their in-store performance at Amoeba and really enjoyed their set: http://www.emusic.com/album/Love-Of-Diagrams-Mosaic-MP3-Download/11026512.html As for US releases, I've been enjoying "Scribble Mural Comic Journal" by A Sunny Day In Glasgow. This is a less pop oriented record than most music discussed here, but I think it is an interesting record sonically and find it draws me in the more I listen to it: http://www.emusic.com/album/A-Sunny-Day-In-Glasgow-Scribble-Mural-Comic-Journal-MP3-Download/10993466.html And in the "promising but too soon to tell" category, I recently downloaded the new Electrelane and National records and like them so far: http://www.emusic.com/album/Electrelane-No-Shouts-No-Calls-MP3-Download/11020763.html http://www.emusic.com/album/The-National-Boxer-MP3-Download/11021102.html Oh, and you should take my advice with a grain of salt, since I'm traditionally in the bottom 5 of "most normal loud-fan". =) - -Sarah ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #129 *******************************
