This is the best one yet. It's no departure, just better--smoother, cleaner, better chops, more confident. Also, the new Of Montreal e.p. is better in five songs to me than the entire HISSING FAUNA album. I wish the album had taken this direction. Just my two cents. - --Mark, glad to be drinking his old coffee again ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 May 2007 12:47:18 EDT From: Scout82667@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] "World Cafe Next" I like David Dye, he's nice in a passive-aggressive sort of way (if he doesn't like you, he just won't play you, and he'll pretend you don't exist). But, I don't understand the concept of the "World Cafe Next" artist. This week, it was The Clientele. I think their first album came out in what, 2000? Recently, it was Camera Obscura. It would seem to me they would be WCN if they were on their first or second record, at the latest. CO became "Next" on their third record, which to me is not that good compared to their first two. Perhaps this isn't a fair comparison, but imagine Scott being a WCN artist on the release of ATTRACTIVE NUISANCE, when PLANTS AND BIRDS came out seven years previously. - --Mark ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 May 2007 15:32:55 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] "World Cafe Next" On 5/12/07, Scout82667@aol.com wrote: > > I like David Dye, he's nice in a passive-aggressive sort of way (if he > doesn't like you, he just won't play you, and he'll pretend you > don't exist). > But, I don't understand the concept of the "World Cafe > Next" artist. This week, > it was The Clientele. Uh, "next" doesn't mean "new." The implication is that this is the "next" artist to make some sort of impact - not that they've done nothing at all previously. Even so: the industry has always disregarded non-hit releases, particularly on smaller labels, if/when an artist has a major label record that looks to have potential to do well. That's just the way the business works: you don't exist until you sell records. Perhaps this isn't a fair comparison, but imagine Scott being a WCN artist > on the release of ATTRACTIVE NUISANCE, when PLANTS AND BIRDS came > out seven > years previously. In fact, he did observe that one of the LF's records (*not* PBRT) got noted in RS's "new" column at one point... I'd point you toward it, but I think it's in the one interview I did with him and I'm fresh out of self-promotion today ;-) - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #115 *******************************
