What a wonderful couple of days (and looong) nights! The 2 Mitch shows I saw were simply amazing. Thanks to Robert for talking me into going to the Rickshaw Stop show IN S.F.. I was dead tired from working way too hard, Stacey had a migraine, and that morning, Robert wasn't feeling too hot either. Anyway, he rebounded, challenged me, and off we went! The Rickshaw Stop turned out to be a pretty cool club, its best feature was an awesome sound system. It seems like its been ages since a band I went to see played in a club with a sound system like this. The drums were mic'd and the sound was booming. The Bye Bye Blackbirds opened up, and they just get better and better with each show! It was very cool to hear them in that type of setting. By the way, Bradley - what was that amazing song with the crazy rhythm thing going on? Very cool! (I also had the privilege of doing some percuusion stuff on new material with them in the studio, and the new stuff is great!) A Strokes wanna-be boy band played next, the chicks seemed to dig them, and they had a goofy, but somewhat compelling lead singer. They were called Magic Bullets. Closing out the night was Mitch. They rocked my world. Mitch is a total monster on guitar! He just goes for it, puts on quite a show, and man - he flat out attacks the guitar! Amazing. Shalini is a cool, slightly detached..Rock Goddess. She looks so cool (& beautiful), and she's playing some mighty bass. The earlier Let's Active songs are not easy songs, some of the bass parts are very complex and she handles them with such ease! Their drummer for hire is a Charlottean named Chris Garges, and he is a total stud. These guys had 1 freakin' rehearsal and to quote my father-in-law, they were truly "tighter than a gnat's ass sittin' on a lemon wedge!" Chris is a great drummer, and a great guy. He's a perfect fit. The next night, suffering from a...rather mild hangover, Stacey hauled Robert and I up to Sacramento for their show at the Fox & Goose. No monster sound system, but very intimate and up close! We were sitting maybe 6 feet from them, and this show rocked just as hard, but I think I even enjoyed it more. Shalini was having a great time (lots of relatives were there), and, right on cue, there was a musical moment that literally brought tears to me eyes. It was their performance of Let's Active's Ornamental. Mind blowing, and they (especially Shalini), just nailed the ever loving bejeesus out of it! Words fail me! This is THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD right now, and I thank my lucky stars I got to see them. Twice! The other great thing about the Sac. show was that Stacey, Robert and I got to spend quality time with all 3 of the band members. I consider them all best of friends (even Chris who I just met that night! Turns out we know a lot of the same folks, esp. Jamie Hoover, and he grew up practically in the same neighborhood as I). We shared lots of drumming geeky stories, and he was a lot of fun. Mitch mentioned there could possibly be more touring in the future, and I hope that there is. It would be a great thing. Must...get...sleep. Lousy how they won't let Mike Watt pose in the pictures, or share in the songwriting, but Mike Watt's a grown man and it's up to him. They even dug up Steve Mackay from God-knows-where. James Williamson allegedly took off for Silicon Valley, and I miss his wildness at times--Ron Asheton, semper Ron Asheton, but don't skimp on the radioactive death ray, okay? Iggy rhymes "I see your hair has energy" with "My dick is turnin' into a tree" and childes rock critics, all within the first :45 . All is right with his world. And didn't Ron Asheton build the world's most fascinating web site? www.ronasheton.com , Andy "I didn't know black people liked mayonnaise." - --overheard at work recently ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #81 ******************************
