I've found it very pleasant through a couple of spins. I haven't kept up with Price's other post-Maggies output so I can't compare "the light divides" to that, but this one reminds me very distinctly of Low and Ida. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 09:32:28 -0400 From: "Michael Zwirn" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] new winterpills on emusic I was prevailed upon by the discussion hereabouts to buy "the light divides" in physical form last week. Well, that's all very positive, and following dmw's longstanding recommendation I've had Winterpills in my want list on Lala.com for awhile. Sounds even better now. Michael W. The one that really knocked me out was the second solo record, HONEY IN THE CHEMICALS. But both quality and style have been pretty steady across the four records; and maybe if I went back and listened to them all now I'd have different favorites. THE LIGHT DIVIDES may well be one of the strongest overall. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 12:40:23 -0700 (PDT) From: "Joseph M. Mallon" Subject: [loud-fans] Mitch Easter on tour! I have been quite remiss in not posting to this list about Mitch Easter's minitour of the West Coast. He played a stonking show last night at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, with the able assistance of The Bye Bye Blackbirds and The Magic Bullets. Tonight, the Mitch Easter Combo is playing at the Fox & Goose in Sacramento, and they'll be appearing tomorrow at the Silverlake Garage in Los Angeles, California. In case the reference is lost, Debbie Harry in the "Heart of Glass" era wore Sprouse, sort of defining disco fashion for the time. With FOW's postmodern sense of humor, I think it'd be a hoot. It would be sort of like back in Athens' glory days when guys (with a don't-give-a-sh** sense of humor) would wear women's dresses to parties (there's a great pic in the PARTY OUT OF BOUNDS book of this). (my fave album > of > '99) You're missing out on one of my favorite albums of 2003--the broad, lumbering, frustratingly-sequenced, but frequently brilliant WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS. I found TRAFFIC AND WEATHER lighter on the power part of the power pop equation, than the first three albums, if still quite enjoyable for the structure, wit, humor and harmonies. Philly Soul, especially as it morphed into disco circa '75, certainly forms a focal point this time around. For better and/or worse, the portraits of white-collar alcoholism slunk away, except possibly "Strapped For Cash." I think "stonking" is west-coast slang for "kicking ass 12 ways" . Which is what Mitch did last night at the Rickshaw Stop last night.. The set was a 50/50 mix of tracks from DYNAMICO and Let's Active songs from what he called the "renaissance era". The older songs like "Flags For Everything", "Ornamental" and "Waters Part" (my email request to mitcheaster.com) match up well with new songs like "1.5 Way Street","I Want a New Scene", and "Timewarping" -- it was hard to tell the new songs from the old ones. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2007 01:36:44 EDT From: CertronC90@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Ted Leo In a message dated 3/30/2007 7:59:40 P.M. I bought that back then! I agree with the sequencing. I thought that came out later than '03. Oh well, it matters not. My fave is still UTOPIA PARKWAY. "Red Dragon Tattoo" is hilarious ("Would you stop pretending I've never been born/Now I look a little more like that guy from Korn), and "Prom Theme" actually makes me misty. I like the way it portrays being young and not yet damaged by life, enjoying the last hurrahs of childhood. "Sick Day" from the first record is also a tear jerker--the hard-working lonely girl. That's a beautiful song. My favorite FOW song. She likes to say "Hey, good lookin' "--she's on her way--she's taking a sick day--soon, - --Mark, glad to hear from our prodigals ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #80 ******************************
