If you've read any of the 33 1/3 series, each is a somewhat idiosyncratic take on the way a particular album affected the book's author. Some are straight (if rather in-depth) analyses, some are more loosely connected and deal w/sociology etc., and at least one is a novel. I gather it's pretty open-ended in terms of what a writer can do concerning an album. Hell, maybe someone could take an album that was important to them in some way - say, _Exile on Main Street_ - and write an album that purports to be a song-for-song response! That'd be neat - I wonder if anyone's ever done anything like that? - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2007 21:41:39 -0500 From: Richard Gagnon Subject: [loud-fans] Swans Way Paul wrote: > Way, way back when I started university, I heard this really > kickin' tune > called "The Anchor" by Swans Way. Wow. That's odd. You'd think the full version would be on the album, an edit on the 45, and both versions on the 12"...how's the short version? Sure enough, they're Brits. I know is that two out of three members (i.e. not the lead guy from Swans Way) became Scarlet Fantastic, and had a little more success on the charts (well, enough to be one hit wonders, which Swans Way themselves achieved with a top 20 hit called Soul Train, which I haven't heard) with much less tasteful music ("No Memory" was their hit). I'm not sure that's quite how it works. At least I hope that's not how it works. Last time out, they got 175 pitches and issued contracts to 21 of the authors. This time out, they said they're looking for stuff for their books scheduled for 2008-09, which sounds like two years' worth, unless they mean October 2008 to October 2009. And they said they're able to publish a maximum of 15 books a year. So it might be 30 they're looking for, especially with the number of submissions. There's bound to be a lot of viable stuff in there. Factoring in one proposition per artist, it comes down to 279, if I counted correctly. I haven't factored in how many are going to suck in and of themselves, or stuff they wouldn't publish in a million years. Well, now that I think of it, if the last tour was the one documented in that Photo Robert video, I don't think that was this one, because I don't remember a Madison stop in that video. (There was a Milwaukee stop - at the old Odd Rock Cafe, located actually fairly near where I live now. It's torn down - someone built a condo there (yes, directly next to a railroad track - they're trying to sell it as railroad-themed, presumably for people who *love trains so much they don't mind hearing them rattling by fifteen feet from their bedroom windows*. Yeesh.) Anyway, my theory is it was the tour before... Mark somebody - a guy who lived in Madison and who used to be on this list (unless he's still here and lurking) gave me a tape of that Milwaukee show - I still have it somewhere, and could confirm the date.) Remember: this tour is now (if I'm doing math correctly - always an iffy situation) nearly old enough to vote! Yes, we are old.
