One of the times I met Dixon I said something gushy but honest, like, "I love almost every album you ever produced." His response was, "Really? Which ones *didn't* you like?" "Um," I said. "I wasn't too into _Bad Pumpkin_." He seemed a little disappointed, but he could see where I was coming from. Three words for loudfans "The Hero Cycle." EP on emusic. On the retro new wave tip, more energy/better hooks/a little more rock swagger than some of the recent pretenders. She's probably a lesbian, as I've fallen for many a lesbian in my day (the women I fall for generally are, and I always say, "Figures."). Fetchin' Bones for me were fantastic. I saw them on the Galaxie 500 tour when they played here and the power went out and Hope said, "We've been sabotaged by Bob Jones University." I loved her for that. Fetchin' Bones are kind of a weird twist on Southern Gothic--Redneck Gothic? Hope is kind of an extreme version of Janis Joplin, maybe? That's not for everyone. Fetchin' Bones to me are Throwing Muses if they grew up going to NASCAR races and eating at fish camps, and maybe I appreciate that more as the grandson of a redneck railroad engineer who died while being hit by a car on his way to the liquor store. - --Mark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2007 11:43:23 -0700 From: "Roger Winston" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] whatever happened to? (Only people who are into lesbians would like her music?) I just don't like her voice. Nails on a chalkboard. Although I must admit for some reason I have not one, but two Fetchin' Bones CDs (GALAXY 500 and MONSTER), so the quality of the music must've overrode my loathing for Hope Nichols' voice somewhat. Or maybe that's just because the CDs date from back when I bought anything I saw on 120 Minutes just out of habit. >as I've fallen for many a lesbian in my day (the >women I fall for generally are, and I always say, >"Figures."). I find out that what I heard was a long EP version of the song. A shorter version appeared on an album called "The Fugitive Kind", which I finally bought on E-Bay (This one arrived as a vinyl LP sealed in very old, yellowing plastic -- never opened, it seems). Would anyone know anything about Swans Way (no apostrophe), apart from the fact that they hearken from around the mid '80s, and are British by all appearances? O'Cayz Corral in Madison (pre-remodel*) - and I agree, the setup was truly bizarre. Plus, there were these enormous "Western"-style table booths set up on the *opposite* side of the bar (same side as the doorway) - so the stage mostly faced the bar lengthwise, and everywhere in the house you were sort of looking sideways at the band. * One night, at about 3:30 in the morning, a trucker lost control of his rig going around the bend outside and plowed right smack into the front of the club. Fortunately, Madison bartime was several hours earlier, so no one was in the club. (One unfortunate person was walking in front of the bar at the time - he probably was killed instantly.) It was a much better club after the remodeling - fucked-up way to get there though. Very weird "stage", with absolutely terrible sound > which I was fightin' all night long. It was, I think, the first I'd heard the band. I'd read about them, and actually that's why i was there. But (and your description of the sound and the general mindset of the band at the time) they didn't quite work for me at the time. I didn't think they were terrible or anything - but just didn't click then. I think shortly afterwards was when I got hold of one of those _Enigma Variations_ things - that was intriguing enough, but I can't remember any more whether I bought any GT albums until after I started reading about the Loud Family and worked my way backwards. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #41 ******************************
