I actually didn't even get so far as getting it. I didn't deliberately NOT get it, it was more of a matter of just never getting around to it. It was partially the surprisingly kind of "meh" reaction on-list where even some of the most positive reviews seemed hedged, partially having found ATTRACTIVE NUISANCE oddly dull (especially coming after DAYS FOR DAYS, which I still consider a career high point), partially not being a particular Anton Barbeau fan, and partially just...I dunno, never getting around to it. I'm sure I'm going to pick it up one of these days when I'm having a splurge at Newbury Comics or something, but my mind was elsewhere this year. "Scott Miller hasn't given up music" would have made my top 10 for 2006 music *news*, though. glenn > Which leads us to the question: what did you Loudfans who got WHAT > IF IT > WORKS? but didn't vote for it, not hear in it? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2007 22:10:40 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: [loud-fans] fame! That's right - this list's favorite formerly-enormous-haired songwriter - along with, of course, Mitch with some pretty bad hair and some cute young woman. Oh wait, that's Michael Quercio. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2007 22:23:40 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] poll results On 2/3/07, glenn mcdonald wrote: > > I thought "Mabel of Maybelline Towers" was teriffic, and I liked > "(Kind of) In Love", but I'm not an Anton Barbeau fan, and the covers > didn't do much for me, so on the album as a whole I'm in the "not a > real LF record" camp. I think "Song About 'Rocks Off'," "Mavis..." and "Don't Bother..." are as good as the best tracks from any other Scott album. "(Kind of) In Love" (the co-write) is fairly lightweight, but catchy. There's a reason "Total Mass Destruction" wasn't released the first time it was recorded. "Flow Thee Water" and "What If It Works?" are among the better Anton songs, while "Pop Song 99" is pretty good, and "I've Been Craving Lately" works well as an album-ending palate-cleanser after the psychedelic depresso-thon that is "DBMWILF" (even if it's otherwise a very lightweight song). "Rocks Off" is an okay cover, even if one half suspects it was recorded primarily to provide context for SARO (I know they'd covered it live before, though). I'm not familiar with the original of "Remember You" (Steve will probably laugh at me now) and I'm glad to hear the quite-close cover of the Cat Stevens tune (although it would have been more interesting had they done more with it than just play it). SARO, Mavis, DBMWILF, KOIL, FTW, WIIW, and PS99 would have made a killer EP (although not in that order). But really: the quality of the songs (middling though some might be) is utterly outweighed by the mere fact that Scott hasn't utterly given up on recording. I'm hoping he records another one and proves this one a warmup. I'll also say that he makes a good editor for Anton (whose own two albums are among his more focused in years) who's musically compatible with Scott, though a lot less so lyrically. The two lyrical styles are a bit jarring, with Anton's goofiness sometimes clashing with Scott's tone. Even Scott's humorous lyrics aren't as goofy as Anton's serious ones. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Feb 2007 00:01:06 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] poll results 2fs wrote: > "I've Been Craving Lately" works > well as an album-ending palate-cleanser after the psychedelic depresso-thon > that is "DBMWILF" I'd rather not have my palate cleansed after DBMWILF and sometimes just shut off the album before the last track. I love DBMWILF and its whole atmosphere and I just want to float in that for a good while after it's over without anything else coming along to kill the buzz. This time, oddly enough, nobody voted for Paris. And Gil beat out the Beatles! Andy I like the Scott tracks, but I'm not a Barbeau fan. I always go over the tracks others sing on on his albums. I loved the first Hex record back in '89, but I don't care for Donette's tracks on GT records, and Levy's tracks also. It's nothing against them personally. It surprises me that Scott refers to his vocals as "miserable whine" on one GT album. I think Scott has a great singing voice, and I want to hear SCOTT, so the new one placed 8th for me in my top ten for the year, because it was only half-Scott. However, I, being the dyed in the kilt Belle and Sebastian fan, didn't put their new one in my top ten for the year, so they beat out B&S, if that means anything. I was like, eh. They're like, I don't know--the magic's gone for me with them. When it became a regular paycheck for them, it started to show in the music--not that I'm against making a living at music! Just make sure it comes off as art, and not product.
