(sorry, everyone else) [Jenny Grover Subject: Fw: [loud-fans] poll results I guess I like the "weighted" measure better...probably becasue it reinforces my deluded perception of myself as a maverick iconoclast. Looking a little deeper, I am pretty surprised that I was the only person who voted for these albums: The Dears - Gang of Losers Anton Barbeau - In the Village of the Apple Sun Humphreys and Keen - The Overflow Buzzcocks - Flat Pack Philosophy And if I had a chance to ammend the vote, I would have added the new Trail of Dead album, which would have ended up making me marginally more normal since two other LoudFans voted for that one. Geez, I was really on autopilot this year, wasn't I? The 'raw' score is the total score of all the albums you voted for, divided by the number of albums you voted for. The 'weighted' score is the sum of (number of points you gave the album * number other people gave it) - ------------------------------------------------------------------- total points assigned on your ballot which is to say, it's like the raw score, only the person who listed The Loud Family first and Momus second will be more normal than the person who listed Momus first and The Loud Family second. a _____________________________________________________________________________ _______ Do you Yahoo!? I had APPLE SUN and DRUG FREE in a tie for 17th (some number that's above where Aaron's poll cuts off). Those releases cancelled each other out, much like all the Robert Pollard related stuff. Anton and Pollard both released 2.5 records last year. The 11 voters who didn't rank WHAT IF IT WORKS? is less than half the number who didn't vote for the next highest ranked albums, so if I were making up statistics, I could claim that it was twice as popular as anything else. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Feb 2007 14:57:45 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Didn't think this could happen.. I suspect the Shins "suffer" from a phenomenon that hit Radiohead too-- their fans skew toward the sort of people who buy a record as soon as it comes out, so they do surprisingly well on the charts at first and then drop. At least, I assumed that was why Radiohead's chart position seems to do that. I would expect the best-selling Elephant 6 record until now to have been In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, but those sales were very, very spread out. Other than in the memories of those of us who got some/all of the records for that reason alone. I know I did. I would say the next best seller would be the Neutral Milk Hotel record which I just recently got again and appreciate it more now than I did then. I'm sure the upcoming Apples In Stereo release will take the crown... Colbert Report exposure and all... I thought there was going to be a new Olivia Tremor Control (The one E6 project I loved from the getgo) disc in the pipeline. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Food fight? FWIW, my personal "rules" for best-of lists exclude EPs, live albums (unless almost all new material), and compilations - on the grounds that it's easier to make five good songs for an EP than ten for a full-length. Or, to put it another way: five good songs make a good EP. The same five good songs plus five middling songs make only a pretty good CD. (Live albums and compilations generally cherry-pick an artist's best work - again, not fair to judge them against entirely new stuff.) Those are my rules, I don't say anyone else needs to pay attention to them. But if the BBB's EP had had another four-five songs as good as the one that are on it, it would have been in top 20 easily, quite possibly higher than that. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2007 23:11:32 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] poll results 2fs wrote: > FWIW, my personal "rules" for best-of lists exclude EPs, live albums (unless > almost all new material), and compilations > Heheh...
