Just based on being on Loud-Fans in '94-'96 plus my own experiences with trying to find PABARAT, TTOOL, and IBC, I'd say you were quite the lucky uncle. Kudos to whatever Greenville record store or stores managed that trick. I ended up going straight to Alias for PABARAT and IBC. Even though Alias' promotion of the later albums sucked, I had a much easier time finding DFD, AN, and the GT reissues at retail. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 15:17:33 EST From: CertronC90@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Shooting Birds At The Stars In a message dated 1/30/2007 12:32:15 P.M. Kudos to whatever Greenville record store or stores managed that trick. I ended up going straight to Alias for PABARAT and IBC. At that time, we had Manifest Discs and Tapes, and they were wonderful. I worked there back in 1995 for a second job (to pay for my habit). Manifest is no more, and the Greenville location was bought, stock and all, and is now Earshot Music, and they do a good job as well. We also have a good record store called Horizon Records, which moved and is now connected to The Bohemian Cafe, and Gene the owner will get artists to come out and do free shows at the cafe, like Aimee Mann and Shalini and Mojave 3, and WNCW will come out and record their sets to play on the station. My friend Ronnie used to work at Horizon back in the '80s, and I'd come over every Sunday afternoon and hang out with him. He turned me on to Game Theory, and basically gave me an education musically--he was into Elvis Costello and even printed up some Red Eye Records tee-shirts that he sold in the store--he was a major Church/Aussie music fan. We'd sit around and eat Ben and Jerry's Peace Pops out of the B&J cooler in the store and listen to lots of music and make fun of dumb customers (we were young--like the "sweat pant women" into Elton John as he called them). I owe Ronnie Estes a lot in molding me musically. He moved to LA back in the '90s and I haven't seen him since. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 16:04:01 EST From: CertronC90@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Shooting Birds At The Stars This is a resend, as my first post never made it to the list. You probably have better access to CDs than I do, living in the San Fernando Valley, only 15 miles or so from Hollywood. I never thought I'd miss Tower this much. I really do miss being able to stop on the way home and grab something I'd been jonesin' for. Tower certainly wasn't great, but it filled a need. Now, we have literally, other than Best Buy and Fry's (very limited selection), ONE record store within 10 miles of here. A small independent called CD Trader. Other than that, I'd have to drive to Hollywood for Virgin or Amoeba. But maybe it's out of your way -- they're also on Ventura Blvd., but towards the other end, just east of Woodman. Their storefront sorta looks like the one Frank Holmes drew for the original cover of "SMiLE". I heard somewhere that they're run by the same guy who started Moby Disc lo so many years ago, but I haven't confirmed that. There's a few gems to be found at Freak Beat, but I kinda prefer CD Trader myself (I'm usin' up another discount card tomorrow... payday, baby!). Hooray fer music, West. Greenville, South Carolina, probably known by Loudfans as the place Gil Ray mentioned on the live DVD where the hairdresser convention was in the '70s (if that event and timeframe doesn't give you plenty of comedic fodder, I don't know what does). Actually Greenville is the largest city in the state, and is right in the middle of the Atlanta to Charlotte I-85 corridor. It's kind of international here because of BMW's plant on the Spartanburg side and all the support industry. A few years back, Simpsonville (a town inside the Greenville area) was the fastest growing place in the US, or the second fastest, I can't remember (Simpsonville has tons of those vinyl-sided homes where you ring the doorbell and the siding behind it flexes). Clemson University is about 45 minutes away and Greenville also has Furman University (for wealthy Baptists--the kids drive really expensive cars) as well as Bob Jones University--a school so cutting edge, it doesn't even have accreditation! I, of course, am a graduate of USC-Spartanburg (but they changed the name to USC-Upstate--it's all in the marketing)--that liberal commuter school for the poor. - --Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 21:47:32 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Shooting Birds At The Stars CertronC90@aol.com wrote: > (Simpsonville has tons of those vinyl-sided homes where you ring the doorbell > and the siding behind it flexes). Unfortunately, that also means I'm closer to Steve Albini. I hope he doesn't beat me up (you know he's like 6'8" and weighs 350 pounds, right?) for the digital-preferring thing.
