I have a couple of comments... 7. Centro-matic - "Calling Thermatico". I saw Will Johnson play at > the same show as Bazan, Mark Eitzel, and Vic Chesnutt, and I think > Johnson actually overshadowed all the other talent on the stage, but > I'm not really sure where to start with Centro-matic since they My personal vote would be for 2003's _Love You Just The Same_, although I like everything I've heard so far. The original version of "Closing Down My House," which I thought was a real highlight of Undertow Orchestra live, was on Will Johnson's _Vulture's Await_. Bazan's a better drummer than Johnson, imho, which I think put Bazan's own songs at a disadvantage. 9. The Brother Kite - "Get On, Me" I don't think of heard of them, > but I like this. Reminds me of a mix between Buffalo Tom and the > Cure, which is probably not a bad mix to make. My take was Echo and the Bunnymen meets the Beach Boys. This kinda-local (Providence RI) band tops my list of "bands that loudfans don't seem to have heard of that I think they'd really like" for 2006, although since this list has in past years contained acts like Beauty Pill that didn't click for many, you should take me with a grain of salt. 17. Victory at Sea - "Bored Otherwise". This is a very good piano- > based indie rock song, and I like it, but the tempos seem to slide > faster and slower in the middle of the song, which distracts me. But > the piano/vocal verses and the crunching choruses are all very > attractive. According to Lala they have a bunch of material out, > surprised I haven't heard of them? Also a local act. As you go back farther in their catalog they get a bit mathier and a bit less pretty, but 2004's "Memories Fade" is in a very similar vein. 23. Voxtrot - "Rise Up in the Dirt". This is really good, catchy, > cleanly produced power pop - Lyrics are verbose and merit careful > listening. Added to the want list. I think Voxtrot has some other fans here, otherwise they would be at the top of the "bands that loudfans don't seem to have heard of that I think they'd really like" above even The Brother Kite. Full length due this year sometime, but last year they released an LP's worth of EPs. All of the above-referenced discs are on eMusic, for them what swing that way. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #11 ******************************
