There's a kid who answers the phone at my night job who spraypainted "The Buzzcocks" on his leather jacket, next to his GG Allin button. What is so weird from a generational standpoint for me is that this leather motorcycle jacket is a Tommy Hilfiger. To him, it's just a jacket. It could be a TH, or one from a cycle shop circa 1970. It wouldn't matter to him, and I don't think this is uncommon with the kids now, which is kind of strange/cool. It's all up for grabs, leave the connotations behind. This takes my back to my College of Charleston days in 1986 with my best girl friend Shireen as she made fun of the "ESPRIT Hardcore" combat boots on display in Belk's at Citadel Mall. I think nowadays, it would be like, huh, "boots," to an 18-year-old girl, and not some kind of unpardonable sin. That is, unless you read Adbusters magazine and only wear Black Spot sneakers and recycle even your dryer lint.... - --Mark, whose been greatly humbled seeing a friend from work on his death bed in the hospital yesterday afternoon who died last night--puts life in perspective--in only three months he went from me offering him a Tylenol for his back pain at work to him dying of cancer in his spine "Life is full of misery, pain and tremendous suffering, and it's all over much too quickly."
