Anyone? Is that song typical, or not? My problem with her voice isn't that it's weird (I often like weird voices), it's that it's weird in a really forced, unnecessary way. It seems a little better on Ys to me, but she's still singing in that fake little girl voice--over-enunciating, making cutesy with vowel shapes, etc. It seems to me that she does have a very cool weird voice, but she keeps messing it up with little girl mannerisms. My problem with her in general is that I just don't hear songwriting that's strong enough to support the weight of the length of Ys' songs and the density of her lyrics. A successful version of this album, to me, is Roy Harper's Stormcock--long, dense folks songs with orchestral support but folk-y and sparse at the same time. The melodic development and execution of the lyrics make it work. Newsom is just rambling and there's not enough freedom or tightly wound arrangement to give it any momentum. I like the harp, I like the idea, but I don't hear enough great stuff in the material to support the delivery. Probably so. I've noticed that whenever 3wk's scroll meets an ampersand, it won't show it or anything that follows.
