It's taken from the Judybats song "An Intense Beige" from the album PAIN MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL. I'd shake my booty to it (though I would need to take into consideration what kind of damage a man of my girth could do in doing such things). He's given the artist permission to use the sample on their album. - --Mark www.ramzvents.com/mediahosting/play.php?mode=song_hifi&band_id=50&song_id=394 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Dec 2006 13:00:45 -0800 (PST) From: Gil Ray Subject: [loud-fans] My Top.....5 ??????? Another year, another pathetically short list of NR's that made it into my collection. Stacey, on the other hand, gets lots of new stuff, and right now she's crazy about the new SILVER SUN CD. Ok, this shouldn't take long. 1. LOUD FAMILY AND ANTON BARBEAU - What If It Works? I love this cd! Scott and Anton do indeed work well together. Not a bad track on here. "Mavis Of Maybelline Towers" is Scott's best all out pop song in years, but as mentioned before, the real gem on here is the bonus track - "Don't Bother Me While I'm Living Forever". In a way, a new direction for Scott (or is it really an old direction?). I love this song, and I love this band. In a perfect world this would be a full time band, making records and playing out full time. Looking forward to the Starry Plough show! 2.PAT TRAVERS AND CARMINE APPICE - Superstition Some of the hardest damn rock I have ever heard. Lots of covers and reworkings of Cactus and Beck Bogert and Appice songs here, but the new versions actually sound better to me than the originals. Never knew a thing about Pat Travers before this, but I knew a lot about Carmine Appice. Great rock drummer from the Vanilla Fudge, Cactus etc.....The perfect hard rock drummer with chops galore and the dude ain't afraid to go nuts. If you want an idea of what this sounds like, go hear and check out the song "Evil": http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:ygjc7i66g71r Love it. 3. ANTON BARBEAU - In The Village Of The Apple Sun My favorite Anton album yet. 4. DON DIXON - The Entire Combustible World In One Small World Man! That's a mouthful. Great record, great songs and as usual, great production. I love the concept and his (dare I say it?) mature direction. Reminds me of Elvis Costello, and that ain't a bad thing. If you have not bought this yet, you really should. 5. NINA GORDON - Bleeding Heart Graffiti Yeah, I know.....it's slick, over-produced, soulless, and paint by numbers, but there are 2 songs on here that I love! "Christmas Lights" and "Kiss Me 'Til It Bleeds". Big and catchy with great playing, esp. the drums on "..'til It Bleeds" (which is Paul McCartney's MONSTER DRUMMER Abe Laboriel Jr! All the drum tracks are good here - huge sound, tight playing but man, I'm really getting sick of drummers that sound great BUT DON'T TAKE ANY CHANCES!!!! Come on guys and gals - dump the damn click track and let it rip!) She's certainly playing it safe here, but dammit, it pleases my ears. With that said, I really hope she takes some chances on her next record. Wow. Guess that's it for 2006. There were a handful of movie soundtrack CD's that I got, but I'm too lazy to go through those right now. Mostly Italian film scores from days gone by. But I will mention a few notable re-discoveries that have made me quite happy. THE GRAHAM BOND ORGANIZATION - The Sound Of '65/There's A Bond Between Us. Pretty stunning beat era blues/jazz/rock/r&b stuff featuring Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. I love this and I'm glad I finally caught up with it. Haven't really heard anything like this before. It's a real cool piece of music history that was going on at the peak of top 40 radio and the British invasion. BEBOP DELUXE - The Very Best Of Actually, there is only a couple of songs I like on here, but my goodness, "Maid In Heaven" is one of the coolest songs I have ever heard! Where the hell has this song been hiding from me? Perfect. COLOSSEUM - Those Who Are About To Die Salute You More early Brit blues/jazz/rock that kicks butt. ELECTRIC FLAG - Old Glory - The Best Of Mike Bloomfielf is one of America's greatest blues guitarists. There is a magnificent clip of him on the Monterrey POP Festival DVD. Buddy Miles whacks the crap out of the drums, too. I have not yet heard the official BYE BYE BLACKBIRDS CD, but I'm sure it will end up on the top tier of this report. The stuff I heard while they were recording it sounded great. (Note to Bradley - please bring one to the LF show next week (if of course you're going!)) They sound great live, too. It ain't easy pulling off those vocal harmonies, but they do it effortlessly! Oh yeah, I almost forgot! I love I AM ATOMIC MAN! My greatest album! :-) Have a great Xmas everyone. I love you all. And go ahead and keep listening to those other songs on the album - they'll worm their way into your brain eventually. That disc really is a classic collection. And, oh yeah, the artwork on I AM ATOMIC MAN would feel right at home on the cover of a Bill Nelson album. Eastern Standard Time, michael@zwirn.com writes: The fact that this song's lyrical catchphrase is "sampling for sampling's sake" is cool, but otherwise the remix doesn't really excite me. What would be true to the Judybats luck is if the song becomes a dance hit. They came really close to being big, but Jeff had a breakdown (Jeff walked off the stage at a Charleston show at The Music Farm back in '94 due to annoyance with a guy in the audience, but he was really having problems then, and anything would have set him off). Plus, he did things you shouldn't do like sing "I Just Wanna F*** Your Hair" here in Greenville at a show at The Peace Center back on the tour for DOWN IN THE SHACKS WHERE THE SATELLITE DISHES GROW (my favorite album of '92)--the cop was having kittens, and I think they were banned from returning. I like the line from the Judybats album '00 when he sings "I almost got famous like you said I could." Jeff now goes by "Heiskell" and has a MySpace page. I always thought the Judybats had great songs and even better lyrics that often told stories in the Southern tradition, but if you're a self-confessed "pop diva," as Heiskell calls himself, it can lead to problems with the general public. The song "An Intense Beige" is about a lover of Heiskell's, a "happy little hygiene queen." Jeff always had to do those songs without sexual references that the general public would get because of the era. I hope in the years to come critics will realize how truly excellent their music was, and will put it in the same caliber of relevance in Southern rock as R.E.M. or Let's Active, where I personally place it. - --Mark ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V6 #263 *******************************
