Almost nobody from here identifies with the South, in large part, I'm guessing, because Kansas was founded mainly by people who came here specifically to prevent it from becoming a slave state. The Western thing makes more sense, especially in (oddly enough) the western part of the state, where cattle tend to outnumber people and you can't grow much food without irrigation. Old cowboy towns like Abilene and Dodge City add creedance to the Western connection. But Kansas has been pretty thoroughly domesticated for quite a long time, and so it doesn't really fit the "Western state" profile very well. It is kind of cute to think of people arguing about what regional label is appropriate -- certainly much better than the recent, obnoxious, and corrosive tendency for people to argue over what part of the country is "the real America". Call me weird, but I say if it's actually in America, and it's actually actual (i.e. not imaginary), it's "the real America".... Your mileage will almost certainly vary, but I think some of youse would dig it. Miles, Rog - I'm looking at you in especial. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2006 17:16:31 EST From: CertronC90@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] John Mellencamp "news" In a message dated 11/9/2006 2:57:38 A.M. Adam Ant and Jim Morrison, and both loved the ladies, the latter even "let his flag fly" at a concert, so it's not fair to assume he is, but he does put a rather large cowboy shaped blip on my gaydar screen, and I'm almost always spot on on that. My gay barber friend Russ, who is into the gay "Bear" subculture, seems to agree with me. But, being concerned with someone's sexuality in 2006 seems so 10 years ago anyway. I guess I'm just fascinated by people. It really doesn't matter. But, have you ever noticed that they don't have magazines devoted to straight people called "Pin" or "Ruler" or whatever? People who are marginalized tend to get obsessed with their subcultural niche. We all have to wash our undies and put gas in our cars the same way. Anyway, just because I was listening to Marshall Crenshaw lately, this whole bit reminded me that once I started hearing the backing vocals in "Let Her Dance" as "leather pants, leather pants, leather pants pants pants," I couldn't hear it any other way.
