This song surfaced in 1999 on the S'More Records compilation called "Pop to You Drop", but this is a dramatically different version though. I imagine I've heard most if not all of the album in live shows over the past 6 years or so, but it will sure be nice to finally hear the studio versions and have a document of Mitch's work for public consumption. It's been way too long in coming. ~Larry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2006 11:06:44 EST From: CertronC90@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Mitch! He certainly has enough of a permanent fan base that respects him and would support him. I know it's been twenty years, but I remember the audience at Township Auditorium in Columbia went nuts for Let's Active, when they opened for R.E.M.. The venue here for the Shalini show was full (people even brought their kids, who were into it). Maybe not breaking fire code and where you couldn't breathe full, like with Aimee Mann, but it was full. - --Mark, who hopes to not hear the phrase "San Francisco values" any more after today np RAINY DAY (the perfect CD for today--it's rainy) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2006 10:55:12 -0800 From: Russ Lewis Subject: [loud-fans] Re: the b-side of our platter, sports fans! The Mellencamp jingle is its apparent replacement. Yeah, I know. I mentioned the carnal desire to run him over with a Chevy Silverado (shot with his own gun) but I mentioned the ass kickin' Toby Keith mobile for variety. There was a recent article in USA Today about Texas and how they lead the US in full-size car and truck purchases, exclusively of an American variety. Toyota has been trying with some difficulty to make inroads with Texans with their full size truck, which kind of ties into the whole Mellencamp/Japan thing from The Onion, and why I said what I said. Southerners and Texans are fairly similar. I'm not Kathy Bates screaming "Mr. Man!!!" If you are Alpha man, be who you are. We need them. God knows I couldn't ever fix my plumbing or my car or do most things a lot of guys like that do for a living. And, Mr. Park, you put a gun in my hand and I'd probably shoot myself in the foot (and then scream "Help me!! I'm a bleeder!!! like Woody Allen). I just resent when men buy into the crap that's fed them from advertisers and judge other men by their choice of what is perceived as non-masculine transportation. I admire the guys who drive the white Priuses, because I think they're smart. White is the most durable paint color and Priuses get amazing gas mileage and have proven reliable. If I could afford one, I would buy one, but I have to look at cost of operation per mile over the long haul, price of the car included, as well as insurance cost. I used to want a New Beetle, but they're too expensive and have a rather spotty reliability rating from Consumer Reports and are expensive to repair. I understand about supporting American workers. I felt sorry for GM last year and I bought a closeout Chevy Cavalier coupe (white). I got an amazing deal on it (3K rebate) and my brother, who was an engineer for a GM subsidiary at the time, told me that the Ecotec engine in my car is quite reliable, and so I got a five-speed one with air for under ten grand new. It's also unbelievably powerful and gets about 36 on the highway. Sh**. Uh-anyway, I think it's interesting (and maddening) the extent to which Americans (maybe people generally) are still invested in what seems ultimately a species of magical, pre-rational "thinking." All other things being equal, why buy an SUV called [insert Western place name here] rather than, say, the Ford Puffball? (Yes, I know: why buy an SUV at all...) Because the sizzle is more important than the steak: the car can be the same, just as steel and tough and offroad or whatever, but name it the Puffball and suddenly the owner's manhood is in question. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2006 00:23:36 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] John Mellencamp "news" CertronC90@aol.com wrote: >But, in the South, white is the best tone for a vehicle. > I gotta add my own 'huh?' here, and to the most durable attribute. I guess if you're going solely by heat reflecting properties, you might think you're better off with a white car in the South, but the South isn't the only place the sun shines and makes cars hot. It's usually more of an issue what color the interior of your car is, how hot or cool it is in the sun. As for durability, I had always heard that white is the least durable paint color for cars, because the pigment properties make it more vulnerable to rust, premature aging, and flaking off. That's because the high elevation, and consequent thinning of air, means that white has less gravitational effect on dust particles than do darker colors. Anyway: I've owned a white car for a couple years now, and while I thought dirt would show up more readily, in fact I haven't noticed a particular difference. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V6 #219 *******************************
