JeFF, Bob Dylan did a baseball themed show on his XM broadcast, and here's what he came up with: Bob Dylan "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" The Skeletons "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" Mabel Scott "Baseball Boogie" Chance Halladay "Home Run" Johnny Darling "Baseball Baby" Lawrence Ferlinghetti "Baseball Canto" Cowboy Copas "Three Strikes And You're Out" Sister Wynona Carr "The Ball Game" Buddy Johnson And His Orchestra "Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?" Les Brown And His Orchestra "Joltin' Joe Dimaggio Billy Bragg & Wilco "Joe Dimaggio's Done It Again" Teddy Brannon Orchestra "Don Newcomb Really Throws That Ball" Sonny Rollins "Newk's Fadeaway" The Treniers With Willie Mays "Say Hey (The Willie Mays Song) Sam Bush "The Wizard Of Oz" Ry Cooder "3rd Base, Dodger Stadium" Russ Brown, Jimmy Komack, Nathaniel Frey, Albert Lineville "Heart" >>> For no good reason, I'm thinking of putting together a mix consisting of songs whose titles are the names of baseball players. (I might stretch that to include song titles that just include or allude to baseball players' names.) What I've thought of so far: that Warren Zevon Bill Lee track, the Barbara Manning Dock Ellis one (which someone sent me), a newish track posted at an mp3 blog called "Nolan Ryan" by the Winks (and apparently having nothing to do w/Ryan), "Lyman Bostock" by Punchdrunk, "Pega Luna, Manny" by the Pernice Brothers, "Peat Rows" (hurk) by Hypnolovewheel, and "Warren Spahn" by the Blackholes. Oh, and "Lou Gehrig's Disease" by Big Dipper, and that Joe DiMaggio track from teh Bragg/Wilco Woody Guthrie project. I'm pretty sure I have a few more, but I can't think of them/am too lazy to check my database right now (anyway, a bit hard to search for: there's no field allowing you to check off "song title mentions ballplayer"). I know there are far more rabid baseball fans than I am on this list - any other suggestions? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2006 10:19:04 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Mitch! "Oh, you noble land of the rising sun/Where discipline and duty are still number one," Mellencamp sings in the video for "Buddha On The Highway," in which he is seen playing his guitar on the hood of a bright orange Accord parked in a terraced rice paddy. "There's a place in Nihon for me and you/I was born in Hokkaido and I'll die there, too." Mellencamp has reportedly begun work on a follow-up song telling the story of Hideo and Mariko, two Okinawan kids doing the best they can, who lose their jobs when Honda closes down the local plant and moves operations to Marysville, OH. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-loud-fans@smoe.org > [mailto:owner-loud-fans@smoe.org] On Behalf Of 2fs > Sent: Monday, November 06, 2006 10:19 AM > To: Gil Ray > Cc: Loud list > Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Mitch! > > On 11/5/06, Gil Ray wrote: > > > > Whoa! I'm a little surprised nobody's mentioned Danny O'Keefe's "Mad Ruth/The Babe" from 1973's "Breezy Stories". Stunning song, superb album. I know that after ~30 years it's faded into obscurity, but I suspect many loudfans would enjoy it. And speaking of old songs, I assume you're going to end your baseball compilation w/Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". It occurred to me this morning that I shouldn't have said what Shalini said about the 'buds artwork. Who knows where e-mails end up? I was reporting it as simply news, an opinion of someone Loudfan affiliated, but didn't think about the ramifications. I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to start a mini Blur/Oasislike band war. Unless I'm misremembering, I thought the point of Jeff's comp was to have songs that had the name of a baseball player in the title, not songs that involved baseball in some way. Heck, otherwise he could include "You Drive".
