I need some new music recommendations, especially from the eclectic corners from folks' collections. To get the ball rolling, here are some records I'd recommend for 2006. Most of these are on emusic... Shearwater - Palo Santo Beirut - Gulag Orkestar Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming Young People - All At Once Sebastien Schuller - Happiness Western States Motel - s/t Film School - s/t Candy Bars - On Cutting Ti-Gers In Half And Understanding Narravation Astronautalis - Mighty Ocean and Nine Dark Theaters - -Sarah P.S. My lala nickname is musicgeek. I'm relatively new to lala, and I haven't figured out how I want to list things in my "have list". Only things I want to part with or all of it? Right now, it is about 65% want to part with, 25% not sure, and 10% don't want to part with. I'm very conflicted, and the list is no where representative of my whole collection... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2006 22:00:59 -0400 From: Michael Zwirn Subject: Re: [loud-fans] 2006? I have Palo Santo on my "want list". My 2006 list is embarrasingly brief. I have purchased amazingly little new music this year. On the plus side, my wife and I just finished a great CD shelving system in our new house, so the music is much more accessible than it used to be. > P.S. My lala nickname is musicgeek. Well, I'm a bit punished for having almost my entire collection (U.S.- released commercial CDs, at least -- not promos, imports, tape, LP, or wax cylinders ...) on Lala.com. I think the 'karma' system punishes one for having a high ratio of the collection set as "keep". n.p. Bettie Serveert "The Link", the final track on Starbuck's 1998 Lilith Fair compilation. I think the 'karma' system > punishes one for having a high ratio of the collection set as "keep". My impression is the opposite-- that they want more data about their members' tastes, so you get a small karma boost for listing more things, and no penalty for marking them 'keep it'. Nobody seems sure, and this is largely based on the breezy "the more you list, the more you get!" language in their FAQ; that said, I've never seen anything to suggest adding everything is *penalized*. a ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2006 23:03:56 -0400 From: Michael Zwirn Subject: Re: [loud-fans] 2006? All I know > is I've shipped a bunch of stuff out and am "owed" some in return, > and am looking for things to add to my want list to increase the > likelihood of getting some stuff back at some point! I guess no one really understands karma on Lala, and it's all awfully arcane to me. Things that contribute to karma make perfect sense most of the time (i.e. ship CDs promptly and in good condition with all art, and your karma benefits), but sometimes they just seem a little weird. Someone wrote on a forum: "Remember lala founders had too much ebay expereince, where "feedback" dominated and destroyed many aspects of ebay. They strongly want to avoid that here. So, they invented "karma" instead, which is a hidden feedback system, that you don't see. It removes all jockeying for feedback points, complaints about "negative feedback", etc." So maybe karma is meant to be semi-opaque at best. Aaron's suggestion on "have lists" is interesting: > My impression is the opposite-- that they want more data about > their members' tastes, so you get a small karma boost for listing > more things, and no penalty for marking them 'keep it'. I guess I just don't know; if I were Lala executives, I'd be vaguely disappointed with a lot of members listing full collections, most of which won't be traded. But hey, I'm clearly not a Lala.com executive. Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2006 09:22:23 -0400 From: "outbound-only email address" Subject: [loud-fans] 2006? Most of these are on emusic... I'm more-or-less trying to keep a running tally here http://www.summervillain.com/blurgh/content/2006/02/2006-contenders/ It also leans heavily on emusic. Although it doesn't have any of the past few weeks' things to catch my ear (The Thermals, Soccer Team, Channels, Tokyo Police Club, Mountain Goats, Radio Birdman, Model/Actress, Metallic Falcons, Uzeda, Ho-Ag, Palomar etc.) My top picks for the year at this point are probably the albums from (in no particular order) Victory at Sea, The Cops, Modern Machines, Parts & Labor, Centro-Matic, Cinemechanica ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V6 #175 *******************************
