I've attended a couple of IPO shows in the past (in SF and LA) and the high point of the shows is David Bash's Alan Freed-like intros for each act "Coming up next, a great band with some great high-energy tunes who are definitely going places! Please welcome (indistinguishable pop band)". It gets a little tiring after the seventh or eighth band, but in this age of jaded indie hipsters, Mr. Bash offers a refreshing dose of enthusiasm. David introduced Scott as "one of the greatest songwriters ever" and "a living legend". He was billed as "Scott Miller (of the Loud Family)", so I was expecting a solo set, but it was the Loud Family without a drummer. Kenny K. on bass, Karen L. on backing vocals, but no one behind the communal IPO drumkit. It was interesting to hear the songs (especially the new ones) on guitar and bass sans drums, but after the third song I felt tempted to jump behind the drumkit to provide a beat (and I can't play a lick). Their six-song set: Where They Walk Over St. Therese / 24 / Like a Girl Jesus / Mavis of Maybelline Towers / Song About Rocks Off / Some Grand Visions The SF IPO festival continues through Tuesday, and Bradley's band the Bye Bye Blackbirds are on the bill the last night at the Red Devil Lounge. They're a great band with some high energy tunes who are going places, so check them out if you're in the area! - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2006 16:48:01 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] IBC+10 / IPO On 8/20/06, Steve Holtebeck wrote: > > Today marks ten years since the release of INTERBABE CONCERN (8/20/1996), > so mark this momentous anniversary by pulling the actual physical IBC CD > off your shelf, giving it a spin on the standalone compact disc player > attached to your home stereo, and cutting and pasting (or re-typing) > these Uniform Resourse Locators into your Netscape 3 (or Lynx) > World Wide Web browser. > > glenn McDonald's two-part War Against Silence review of IBC > http://www.furia.com/page.cgi?type=twas&id=twas0087 > http://www.furia.com/page.cgi?type=twas&id=twas0088 > > Jeff Norman's review of IBC > http://www.uwm.edu/~jenor/IBCrev.html > > Aaron Mandel's IBC annotations page > http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~aaron/scannot/footlyr.cgi?interbabe.txt > > Brian Block's review > http://www.epinions.com/content_212660948612 > > Michael Zwirn's IBC review (from 2000) > http://mailgate.supereva.com/rec/rec.music.reviews/msg00009.html Thanks for posting those links, Steve - these were all really insightful and interesting to read (except that second guy, whose stuff I can never relate to). In particular, the two glenn pieces I re-remember as being, respectively, one of his best pieces of music writing per se and as one of his most moving pieces of personal writing. At least the first one was, at the time, an inspiration and a model for my own writing - so thanks in particular for reminding me of that piece. I'm glad Michael Zwirn was right that "we'[d] be hearing from Scott Miller again." (I'd also forgotten that IBC was released on Rose's birthday!) - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2006 18:53:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Gil Ray Subject: Re: [loud-fans] IBC+10 / IPO I agree, thanks a lot, Steve.
