It looks like this is a different collaboration with the LF and someone named "Anton Barbeaeu". The 625 is a SD box with two tuners and DVR capability. The DVR (i.e. Tivo) fee is minimal (maybe $5 or $10/month) and I can record two shows at a time on each receiver. That means I could conceivably record 4 shows at the same time (there is some odd nexus of One Tree Hill/Boston Legal/The OC/etc. that my wife is hooked on)! I haven't had any problems with the setup. I can skip forward 30 seconds at a time and I can set up timers to record based upon the schedule, not hard-and-fast times (it's called Dish Pass). The schedule goes out about 10 days. The bottom line was the whole setup was just a little more expensive than my basic analog cable I had from Cox. The kiss-off call to Cox was in itself worth more than extra fee I'm paying. I hate Cox cable. They are the least customer-oriented company I've ever encountered. Not to be clichi about it, but understand that this will change your life - not just your TV viewing habits. You won't be able to enjoy going to the movies because you won't be able to replay any line you missed. The same goes for broadcast radio. I keep looking for the remote so I can pause or rewind (shades of Sandler's "Click"?). I cannot imagine watching an episode of "Strangers With Candy" in real-time - I'd only be able to process about half of the jokes. Anyway, my main point is that Tivo is not the only option. I think Dish Network will give you the same functionality for much less money - and certainly without any "membership fee" or lifelong commitment. On the kids music front, my seven-year-old's tastes are about as eclectic as mine. I tried going the kiddy-music route, but found the hit rate was about the same as any CD of mine she played. We'll listen to the first TMBG kid's album and she likes a few songs (as do I), but she'd much rather listen to Belle And Sebastian. She's also discovered some stuff on her own or from classmates and I'm certainly not going to discourage her from listening to what she wants (Britney, Drake Bell, High School Musical, etc). I just make sure the good stuff's available when she wants it. Some of her favorites are Old 97's, B&S, The Clash, Lemonheads, The Negro Problem, and Grandaddy. She seems to shy away from stuff that's a little for complex or note-dense like Game Theory or The New Pornographers, which is understandable. But, imagine a father's pride when I heard her singing while in the bathtub: "Bop bop ba da da - GREEN SLIDE!", which was her version of Pavement's Debris Slide. Of course, we've had the conversation about how it's OK to say "fuck" when you're singing, but not in real life. Just like it's OK to throw a cream pie in the face of your teacher on TV, but not in real life. I can't tell you how many times I've searched for the rewind button on the the car radio while listening to a traffic report or news item I didn't quite catch. You become so accustomed to having that repeatable function as a given. I have the Directv setup which is Dish's main rival in satellite broadcasting. I think the Tivo charge is $6 a month. I hardly if ever watch TV in "real time" anymore. The menu system and instructions are very intuitive and I love the keyword record functions.A couple of months back when T Bone Burnett announced his brief tour I added "Burnett" as a keyword wish-list item and, though I did get a few programs with Carol Burnett I did wake up one moring to find T Bone had been on Leno which was exactly what I was fishing for. I have absolutely no patience for the commercials now. I could never go back to non-Tivo viewing, I'm hooked. By far the coolest thing though is the Season Pass where any show of your choosing will be recorded whenever/whereever it is.
