I think no matter what you do you'll run into the issue that you need to decompress the MP3 and then recompress it (even if this is behind the scenes). That will mean a loss of quality. In theory you could probably chop off some of the frames of the MP3 file, but I don't know of anything that does this. Maybe that's what you're asking for and I'm just annoying you. In any case, Audacity is a good free audio editing program. I'm a Mac person so probably not helpful to you, but you just reminded me of my mild annoyance a few years back that I had to acquire such software entirely because of Stew/Negro Problem records. If you're gonna bury your bonus tracks in a track that includes 20 minutes of silence, at least have the decency to make said bonus tracks mildly amusing trifles that nobody will care if they hear a second time, is what I think. That will mean a loss of quality. Although if both the original mp3 and the redone one are at relatively high quality, you probably won't notice much. And of course if you have the actual CD, you can simply rip the .wav files, edit them with Audacity, and then encode to mp3 for your iPod or whatever. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2006 22:23:09 -0400 From: "Stewart Mason" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] mp3 editing software? It always puzzled me that some of the best songs on POST-MINSTREL SYNDROME in particular were buried in the bonus tracks. The audio-verite tour diary is the only non-essential tune in the lot, and even it's kinda charming, but "Heidegger In Harlem" and "Camelot" are among Stew's finest tunes. At least, this is the theory under which I've used raw-data copying tools (like 'dd' under Unix) to edit mp3s without having to expand and recompress, and it's always worked. If it's a fixed-bitrate mp3, you can even figure out where to cut a priori. If it's a variable-bitrate file, you have to keep guessing until you get it right. I don't know how to do any of this with Windows, so I realize I'm not being helpful about Michael's original question. That said, I tried to find Mac freeware to do this a while ago, and the closest I got was shareware whose free version inserted 5-second delays into most operations as an incentive for you to send them money. I used it to process some stuff I recorded in mono off videotape to prepare it for burning it to CD for my kids. The other audio editor I've used is Nero Audio Editor, which comes with some OEM installations of Nero Burning ROM (although I believe not the limited edition). Given a tossup, I like Nero's UI a little better, but Audacity delivers the goods for a price you can't beat. And as the signature will indicate, I've moved from North Carolina for the first time in seven years. Two months after getting back from Iraq, I'm at Fort Leavenworth to attend the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies as a student. On an unrelated note...I remember very clearly a conversation in January 1999 with Jon Tveite and Melissa Rodenbeek in person when they said they didn't plan to still be in Manhattan, Kansas (where I was visiting during my last stint at Fort Leavenworth for school) seven years afterwards. Since it's been seven years since that chat, did the prediction hold? - -- Francis J. H.
