And I think she does tower, even if Scott wasn't thinking of it as a verb. :) Dennis ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 00:57:15 -0700 From: Russ Lewis Subject: [loud-fans] Dennis Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2006 23:01:39 -0700 From: Dennis Subject: [loud-fans] anyone an adam marsland fan? I'll bet you can find a copy cheap on Half.com. I do recommend it to anyone who likes a good toon. - --Scott Tissue [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type image/gif which had a name of BG 061.gif] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 07:50:59 -0400 From: "Janet Ingraham Dwyer" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] "Mavis of Maybelline Towers" tentative final version On 6/27/06, Dennis wrote: > > Who is Mavis? It feels great to delurk (c/mon folks, try it!) and even better to listen to WIIW. Who is Mavis? I think: http://tinyurl.com/4gbge. Look at her towering over the skies! (Well, alongside the skies, perhaps. Between the towers. Hm!) See also: http://tinyurl.com/k5um4, which may be significant, and of course: http://naid.sppsr.ucla.edu/coneyisland/mapsdocs/con06-map35.htm and the like. And think of all the typing practice we are getting, just reflecting on this song. I think "You Don't Know Me" is probably the best Summertime soundtrack since Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees". I fell in love w/it the first time I heard "Other Than Me," which name-checks both Aimee Mann and Buffy. If you want to explore further, check out his work w/the band Cockeyed Ghost. And she's kickin' it in the Caribbean now, too. (Hmm. Maybe the song is actually about the struggle between old and new technology, and it affirms that the skill of typing endures even when the typewriter is gone. This would explain those last lines about having "disappeared" but "holding steady--and of course "it's weird already" refers to the layout of the keyboard. ;-) And speaking of Scott songs making one think, I confess I never paid much attention to the lyrics of "Rocks Off" before. But it's clearly been an important song for Scott. I wonder if it didn't already provide some impetus for a song like "Jimmy Still Comes Around"? Maybe Maybelline Towers are/is over the skies, not in the sense of height so much as distance. A place you would get to by flying there, sort of like overseas, only overskies. Make of that what you will. Maybe the song is an ode to motherhood? > No real Scott connection, but Adam frequently works with Stew. Adam Marsland was at the final LF show at Spaceland in LA.
