First, here's the lyrics to the Stones' "Rocks Off" (as found on one of the innumerable lyrics sites on the web) - important because "Song About 'Rocks Off' " kind of really is a song about "Rocks Off": I hear you talking when I'm on the street, Your mouth don't move but I can hear you speak. What's the matter with the boy? He don't come around no more, Is he checking out for sure? Is he gonna close the door on me? I'm always hearing voices on the street, I want to shout, but I can't hardly speak. I was making love last night To a dancer friend of mine. I can't seem to stay in step, 'cause she come ev'ry time that she pirouettes over me. And I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming, I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping. I'm zipping through the days at lightning speed. Plug in, flush out and fire the fuckin' feed. Heading for the overload, Splattered on the dirty road, Kick me like you've kicked before, I can't even feel the pain no more. But I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming, (only get them off) I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping. (only get them off) Feel so hypnotized, can't describe the scene. It's all mesmerized all that inside me. The sunshine bores the daylights out of me. Chasing shadows moonlight mystery. Headed for the overload, Splattered on the dirty road, Kick me like you've kicked before, I can't even feel the pain no more. But I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming (only get them off, get them off), I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping (only get them off, get them off). - ------------ Anyway, here's my guess as to SARO. Words I'm not sure about have [?] after them, the same symbols separated by spaces mean there's a whole word or phrase missing. Corrections very welcome! Song About "Rocks Off" (Scott Miller) ("dust beneath the eagle's wings") "Please stay" passes easily for nothing to say when there's someplace to go Okay those are my friends waving wildly don't mind them; I told them so I don't like mind games Ah, but it was good when mine were working My demolicious[?] life when all the time saner thoughts were lurking Don't watch my mouth move that was my devil's mask pretending that I was driving age and women rage as the fling was ending One dog is [fog? fawn?] two dogs are perfect dogs faux pas is raw/wrong[?] so pirouette not over this fond lake swan I wonder if I'd look older in new clothes? Maybe it's "back off" Maybe it's "come a little closer" Of course the mademoiselle hides it well Ask someone who knows her Twelve-year bender I stayed respectable Hey, big spender They showed me pictures All I remember from before being too old was being too young Maybe it's "goodbye" Maybe it's "Arrivederci Roma" The [?] in black who has your back hands you your diploma Please go Your handshake is all the holding I know And all I need today - ----------------------- I'm thinking only Scott Miller would find the pathos in a song like "Rocks Off" and use it to explore philosophical ideas about engagement in the world, aging, the gap between appearance and reality, etc. But then Jagger's a better lyricist than most people credit him for - really, "Rocks Off" is a lot more than just another obnoxious song about fucking*: there is pathos in the notion that the narrator can only get off when he's asleep and dreaming (as opposed to being wide awake with an actual other person in bed with him). Anyway, that's my first take on it. Assuming anyone but crickets are here, yours? *Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that the Rolling Stones were the first band (other than old, obscure blues records) to use "come" in the sexual sense - some track on Let It Bleed, I think? - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2006 23:31:05 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: [loud-fans] WIIW lyrics: "Pop Song 99" Here's the next track - again, this is my best guess so far. (Note: not all songs on the new CD mention dogs. I don't think...) Pop Song 99 (Anton) (chorus:) Pop song ringing in my ear makes me wonder what I'm doing here without my freaky angel on my shoulder sunshine and a beer not the sort to drink this stuff I wanna treat her right enough So here comes her mother she's coming for me She says, "there's coffee in the cup 'less you'd rather have tea" I said, "no thank you I'm thirsty, and tea will be fine" She opens up the Bible reads the very first line (it says) (chorus) The ghost of her father asleep in his chair his snoring doesn't bother me as much as his hair which sits on his head as if it's not there The problem with the kids today is that they don't care about magic Pop song wakes me from my bed It's come for the junk that's in my head Pop song rich and gooey glue sticks me to me and me to you Pop song ringing in my Pop song ringing in my head Visions of summer a white dog and you We saw it in Chicago at the Waffle House too It was a trip to Mousako's[?] a scene at The Spoon[?] in the blue light of the stereo under St. Nick's pink moon It was magic Magic Magic Magic (chorus) - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2006 22:51:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Gil Ray Subject: Re: [loud-fans] first pass at lyrics: "Song About 'Rocks Off'" This is cool, Jeff.
