The Golden Republic: The Turning Of The World (3) The very British and glammy sounding Golden Republic, who are actually from Kansas City, MO. This is the only song on the mix that I had myself. 02. Dixie Dirt: Sleep Part II (3) Mid-tempo hypnotic guitar rock with sexy, husky female vocals. *NOT* husky the dog! 03. The Greenhornes: Shelter Of Your Arms (2.5) This sounded very eighties guitar underground garage rock revival. Hope that makes sense to anyone. ;) The sort of song balding forty somethings rock out to at gigs to show how much they are still in touch with their inner child. I could do without those balding forty somethings at gigs, but I do quite like this song. Not that I am balding or forty. Yet. 04. Aloha: I Don't Know What Else To Do (3) Nice organ at the beginning. Organs are always nice. Cool song with slightly desperate sounding vocals. 05. Dungen: Ta Det Lugnt (5) There was a Dungen song (which I also liked a lot!) on a mix I got from Jeffrey, and Jen has offered me the opportunity to check out more Dungen with this song. Classic rock aprhs-la-lettre with a crunchy and distorted Chrome-like guitar. Four minutes into the song, the mood and music suddenly change and we get a bit of piano followed with a late night jazzy episode. Love it! 06. Caribou: Yeti (3.5) This sounded very kiwi-inspired, as in Tall Dwarfs. Cute and quirky, uptempo ditty by the man previously known as Manitoba (if I'm not mistaken). 07. Death Cab For Cutie: Soul Meets Body (4) This might be the first time I get to hear Death Cab For Cutie (the band, not the song). This sounded very eighties as well. Sort of a mixture of The Police, Fischer-Z, and a couple other bands from that era. I liked the vocals a lot. 08. Lake Trout: Shiny Wrapper (2.5) The follow-up to Lake Placid. No, wait, that was a movie. Nice rolling bass on this one. 09. Smallspace: Come Down Wake Up (2) One of the few songs on the mix that didn't do all that much for me. 10. Mazarin: Northeast Winter (2.5) Another kiwi song? 11. Spouse: Army Song (2.5) Song about Johnny who wants to join the army. 12. Sufjan Stevens: Jacksonville (3) Sufjan gets mentioned a lot in magazines, but this might be the first time I get to hear him. Very pleasing song with banjo, strings and female backing vocals. 13. The Last: Anything That's Out There (2.5) Is this new? It sounded very sixties-America's-answer-to-the-British-Invasion. 14. The Up And Out: Gruelled Again (2.5-3) Uptempo, glamrock, but with early eighties neurotic guitars. Jen keeps messing with my head by using new songs that sound like they are from another decade. But maybe I'm wrong and this is really from the seventies? 15. Division Of Laura Lee: Loveless (2) Not bad, but it droned on a bit too long. Parts of it (especially the guitar) reminded me of U2, which was rather unfortunate. It could have been worse though, but thankfully the vocals didn't remind me of Bono. HA! 16. Uncut: Copilot (2.5) Drum machine, ping pong guitar/bass -which turns all distortio on you in the chorus- and subdued vocals. Reminded me somewhat of Belgian band Dead Man Ray. 17. The Brian Jonestown Massacre: God Is My Girlfriend (2.5-3) Put the titles for songs 16 and 17 together and you have God Is My Copilot. I watched the documentary, downloaded all the albums from the website but yet have to hear them, so this song was a cool teaser. Sixties psychedelica translated to the 00's. 18. A Band Of Bees: These Are The Ghosts (undead version) (2.5) Just when you think this song has gone on too long, they throw in some trumpets, and the trumpets save the day. Thanks for a cool mix, Jen, with, especially in the first half, lots of songs that make me eager to check out the corresponding artists! :) Toodlepip, - -Stef ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 May 2006 12:55:53 -0400 From: "Stefaan Hurts" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Jenny Grover's October mix > aprhs-la-lettre I really put that funky French accent on there!
