Basically, you make up a list of CDs you want to get rid of, and then you make up a list of CDs you want. If their computer can set it up so that you both get rid of a CD and get a CD, you pay $1.50, and the discs change hands. The efficiency is that this doesn't need to be a bilateral trade at all. I can send something to Jeff, and get something from Roger. You must give to receive, but that's the only constraint. If there's a problem, I suspect it will come from that notion that once you get rid of a used CD, you should also get rid of "backup" copies (i.e., digital copies) - since that's obviously unenforceable, and open to abuse by anyone willing to take the time to shuffle CDs around for a buck-and-an-arf apiece. It would surprise me not at all if the industry claims the "trading" thing is all a smokescreen to facilitate mass-copying of CDs (purchase once, deliver multiply). But since actual physical copies *will* be trading hands, that argument seems to fall apart. It's smart of La La to insist on that (and to not trade single, digital songs) - since otherwise, it pretty much *would* be what my hypothetical industry claim says it would be. The precedent of Netflix (which, after all, does facilitate the copying of DVDs by anyone with the technological means to do so) is on their side as well. Yeah, but all of Rog's music sucks, so you wouldn't want that. > More info: > http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6048507.html > > Oh, and you get pre-paid envelopes, so no annoying trips to the post office! (Hey, I lied: judging from his mixes, Rog has lots of good music. Is he getting rid of any of it? What does that mean? I don't understand. Hey, I just got around to listening to the new Belle & Sebastian (downloaded from eMusic). I really like the first half or so and then it kinda goes downhill from there. What's up with that? (Note: I haven't been a huge B&S fan in the past.) For me, I like basically the seven songs in the middle and hate the first three and the last three. On the other hand, I like those songs specifically because they don't sound much like B&S, and I don't like the others because they do.
