I haven't seen them in years, but I knew they had a band, and of late they've been getting a lot of press. Well, their band - with the unlikely name Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos - has signed with Artemis. The label's press guy sent me the record, and it's really good. The Dust of Retreat comes out March 28, 2006. RIYL: Decemberists, Rogue Wave (with whom they toured). Richard Edwards is the lead singer and songwriter, Andy plays electric guitar, Chris plays drums. They have nice orch pop touches - some horns, cello, Rhodes synthesizer - so it's a bit more ornate than the average singer-songwriter smart-pop. http://margotandthenuclearsoandsos.com Michael W. Is it pretty representative? Well, listening to the album it's hard to hear "singles" but yeah, that's one of the more immediately engaging tracks. Some of it is more sorta laid-back and less direct, but that one and "Skeleton Key" grab you pretty quickly. It is full of beautiful music from the brief score pieces by Max Avery Lichtenstein (only available on I Tunes) to songs from Lisa Germano, Iron & Wine, Red House Painters (covering John Denver's Around & Around beautifully), Low, Magnetic Fields, the song "Frank Mills" from Hair (a song Scott M and I bonded over shortly after we first met back in 82), Cocteau Twins and of course a Hex track. I think it is not a film for everyone, but I expect it will really move some people here, it is almost more collage art than movie. We loaned our DVD to Scott, he loved it too, so that might be a better endorsement than I can give. - - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Feb 2006 23:19:54 -0500 From: "jer fairall" Subject: Re: Re: [loud-fans] Donnette and Steve Kilby - Tarnation? Not only is that a Hex song on the soundtrack, but Jonathan Caouette also talks up the quite lovingly and enthusiastically on the DVD's director commentary track.
