May I beg the court for a list of annoying tuba solos to be found out there? I'll spot you one: Howard Johnson [sic] on the live version of "Rag Mama Rag," from the Band's ROCK OF AGES (of which I'm rather fond). You give me four more. > I think Lou Reed was on the right track when he (supposedly) started > fining anyone in the VU for playing any blues lick. Probably the > problem is there's nothing easier to play than the blues badly. How about free jazz, badly? Ask somebody who used to own the first Guiseppe Logan record (though I see by AllMusic that Stewart liked it, at least). Does Sterling Morrison get to keep his money if he invents a new blues lick instead of playing "any" old one? As to what Xiu Xiu sounds like, my own modest attempt below: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:aeb1z82a4yv2 Taking into consideration that Neil Peart lost a wife *and* a daughter, I think we can find some other drummer to spoof, Andy "spud" - --carved by person or persons unknown on the door leading into our condo ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 07:53:50 EST From: GlenSarvad@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] Re: Tall Dwarfs Yes- the song is called "Paul's Place." It is on Hello Cruel World, and originally on the Louis Likes His Daily Dip EP. I've been thinking a lot about Tall Dwarfs lately- I recently interviewed Alec Bathgate for an TD piece I wrote (contact me off list if you'd like a copy) coinciding with the US reissue of their Weeville and Fork Songs LPs. I also saw them do an amazing set this summer opening for Olivia Tremor Control at an outdoor "commune" in Athens. Finally, someone on list had Bathgate's solo disc on their Best Of list- I didn't know it existed until then. I'm looking for the title of a Tall Dwarfs track I taped off the radio many, many moons ago (about 18 years' worth of moons, to be precise). It's supposed to be on HELLO CRUEL WORLD, but I checked the samples of all the songs for that album on MP3.COM and none of the songs sound like this track. It starts with "Two o'clock in the afternoon...". ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 10:45:44 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] streaming tuba On 1/28/06, zoom@muppetlabs.com wrote: > > I'll take a bass solo over a tuba solo any day. > > May I beg the court for a list of annoying tuba solos to be found out there? > > I'll spot you one: Howard Johnson [sic] on the live version of "Rag Mama > Rag," from the Band's ROCK OF AGES (of which I'm rather fond). But obviously you don't come from polka country...where cries of "give the tuba player some!" are legendary, and are often indulged with five-minute oompa frenzies. > > problem is there's nothing easier to play than the blues badly. > > How about free jazz, badly? If I were in a really mean mood, I might say: how can you tell? But I don't really believe that. So I'll just agree: yes, it's very easy to play free jazz badly...although even harder for the average person to hear the difference. > Taking into consideration that Neil Peart lost a wife *and* a daughter, I > think we can find some other drummer to spoof, Well, if Neil were reading this, I'm sure I would have been more sensitive. Truth is, I forgot about that. And I don't mean to minimize how devastating such tragedies would be when I say that...uh, they really don't matter when you're just making a joke about a person who isn't present. And if the joke had a point, and the point was "too many drums!," suffering doesn't exempt one from criticism, particularly from things utterly unrelated to suffering. That's the (semi)serious response. The more serious response is (quoting David Thomas): "it's a joke, man..." - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 10:11:47 -0800 From: "Steve Holtebeck" Subject: [loud-fans] worthwhile shows up and down the West Coast I think I've mentioned Anton Barbeau's west-coast tour here before, but now he's actually on the road, so here are the dates and places.
