Probably from some uppity > colonials wanting to differentiate themselves from the effete > British... I hate the American practice, and have been doing things British-style for a long time. It doesn't make any sense at all, to pretend that it doesn't matter whether the punctuation is part of the quote or not. Sometimes it really does. I heard once that it is just a type-setting thing. Putting the period outside the quotes leaves it more vulnerable to physically breaking off, apparently. I don't remember where I heard that, nor do I know how reliable it is, but I guess it sounds plausible. Sorry if someone else has already addressed this. I'm on the digest now, and I don't even read those very faithfully anymore. For all who still remember me from the days when I used to post a lot, I'm doing all right, and I hope you are, too. It is good to see familiar names when I do read the digests, and cool that there are new people, too. One of these days I will probably get more involved again. I've been on a big Let's Active kick lately, which often leads to a big Game Theory kick. When is Scott's new project supposed to come out? And of course if you listen to the various permutations of personnel on Scott's records, particularly those where a particular band (or most of it) was on their second record together, you can hear the way different musicians affected the sound. The difference between the Alison LF and the Paul W. LF is pretty striking (although I'm sure it's not entirely due to personnel changes as well as personal changes). So I think people recognize that it's not just "The Scott Show." I'm really curious about this new one - Anton, of course, is his own performer (and that's something that hasn't really happened to this degree before, reflected in the co-billing), and it's intriguing to hear from him that the sound is heading towards an IbC-like intensity. (Of course, IbC is probably my fave LF album, so that's good for me to hear...) - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Dec 2005 10:32:09 -0800 (PST) From: "Joseph M. Paul was more into noise & waveforms, while Alison was more into piano/organ sounds, and I think that is reflected in the overall sound. Exactly - and the differences in those sounds also reflected the differences in the general moods of the two records. Which came first? Dunno - but I'd like to think Scott is smart about selecting personnel, and finds players who can do the things he wants the music to do. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Dec 2005 20:35:43 -0500 From: "Stefaan Hurts" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Brian's new Interbabe Concern review On Fri, 16 Dec 2005 14:29:14 -0600, "2fs" said: > Dunno - but I'd like to think Scott is smart about selecting > personnel, and finds players who can do the things he wants the music > to do. One day you guys will be shocked to read that all of the Loud Family's music was written by a bunch of monkeys (the same ones who wrote Shakespeare's works). - -- Stefaan Hurts stef_hurts@fastmail.fm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Dec 2005 00:02:39 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Brian's new Interbabe Concern review On 12/16/05, Stefaan Hurts wrote: > On Fri, 16 Dec 2005 14:29:14 -0600, "2fs" said: > > Dunno - but I'd like to think Scott is smart about selecting > > personnel, and finds players who can do the things he wants the music > > to do. > > One day you guys will be shocked to read that all of the Loud Family's > music was written by a bunch of monkeys (the same ones who wrote > Shakespeare's works). But Stef: I just *did* read that "all of the Loud Family's music was written by a bunch of monkeys (the same ones who wrote Shakespeare's works)."
