That band put out three very fine albums, and Gates released a solo EP in 2001 that was one of my favorites of that year...since then...? Does anyone know? Did she become a Carmelite nun? THE FAST RISE AND FALL OF THE SOUTH, has quickly elevated itself to "best thing I've heard this year" status, and with a few tracks left on my November Emusic booster pack, I'm wondering which of their albums to get next. They've put out four full-length albums and one EP since 2000, so I don't know how they managed to stay beneath my radar for all that time. Based on the new album, I don't think the KM sound like any of the bands they're compared to in reviews -- the only similarity to the Kinks is alphabetical proximity, and Pink Floyd is a similar head-scratcher (although I'm not super-familiar with the MEDDLE/OBSCURED BY CLOUDS era mentioned in the reviews that all seem to be cribbed from each other). They're more pastoral and folky with lots of subtle hooks that get stuck in your head. The closest comparison I can find are MURMUR (R.E.M.) and MUMMER (XTC), but that's more in the evocations than the actual sounds. Anyway, it's wonderful stuff, highly recommended to anyone who enjoys that kind of thing. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Nov 2005 23:05:59 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Kingsbury Manx Steve Holtebeck wrote: > Is anyone familiar with this band's back catalog? I have Aztec Discipline, as well as Fast Rise, and I recommend it if you like Fast Rise, though it's less waltzy and a bit more indie rock. Pelz Komet is one of my faves from it, and you can hear it here http://www.thekingsburymanx.com/etc.html as well as older material, which implies they were more alt-country and less appealing to my tastes in the past. > Based on the new album, I don't think the KM sound like any of the > bands they're compared to in reviews -- the only similarity to the > Kinks is alphabetical proximity, and Pink Floyd is a similar > head-scratcher (although I'm not super-familiar with the > MEDDLE/OBSCURED BY CLOUDS era mentioned in the reviews that all seem > to be cribbed from each other). Huh?? I don't hear that stuff either, and I am very familiar with said Floyd albums. > They're more pastoral and folky with lots of subtle hooks that get > stuck in your head. That's a good description of them, really. > The closest comparison I can find are MURMUR (R.E.M.) and MUMMER > (XTC), but that's more in the evocations than the actual sounds. > Anyway, it's wonderful stuff, highly recommended to anyone who enjoys > that kind of thing. Fast Rise is a lovely album, for which I'm in the process of writing a review for the Dec. Tone and Groove issue. Good to hear that someone else is digging them.
