I can't help you with your actual questions...but I've always thought that, as a genre designator, "No Depression" is nearly as baffling as "the scene that celebrates itself" was. In both cases, it's pretty much only comprehensible to people who already know what the phrase means. I'm surprised that (a) people are still using it, and (b) more surprised that people are (it's implied by the way you phrase it) using it to describe their music - esp. since nearly every musician I know instinctively disdains genre labels (no matter how obviously genre-epitomizing their actual music might be). In utterly other news, did anyone else notice that Zach on _Gilmore Girls_ was wearing a Residents t-shirt in last night's episode? - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2005 19:43:08 -0500 (EST) From: Bill Silvers Subject: Re: [loud-fans] No Depression Per the intro at the magazine's website, http://www.nodepression.net/ : -b.s. For the record, a little history: No Depression was launched in September 1995 as a quarterly publication and became bimonthly in September 1996. The name of the magazine refers to the 1930s Carter Family song No Depression In Heaven, the 1990 Uncle Tupelo album No Depression, and an internet discussion board. - -----Original Message----- From: dc Sent: Nov 16, 2005 7:10 PM To: loud-fans@smoe.org Subject: [loud-fans] No Depression i'm doing a piece on a local "No Depression" songstress for the hometown paper, and i'm throwing in a few lines about the origin of the phrase. my general understanding is that the Carter Family begat a song called "No Depression," which begat Uncle Tupelo, which begat the magazine chronicling the movement. question: in looking up the Carter Family, i find alternate references to songs called "No Depression" and "No Depression in Heaven." are these in fact the same song? thanks, as folks used to say in these parts, in advance doug c ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2005 18:09:28 -0800 From: dc Subject: Re: [loud-fans] No Depression On Nov 16, 2005, at 4:43 PM, Bill Silvers wrote: > For the record, a little history: ah yes, thank you! ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #257 *******************************
