It's a love/hate sort of record (scores on metacritic are ranging from 20 to 100). I love it, while a friend of mine who has loved the Furnaces' last three albums said it's the worst record he has ever bought. For some reason I imagine Tim Walters digging it a lot. Maybe it's the combination of the avant-garde and traditional elements. The whole album is streaming for free at Amazon. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2005 11:22:23 -0600 From: "Roger Winston" Subject: [loud-fans] we have a title and a date Don't recall anyone mentioning this yet... Parts of it irk me for the same reason Blueberry Boat (the only other Fiery Furnaces that I've heard) does: Eleanor's singing voice bothers me, and while I'm sure some of the clumsy rhymes are intentional, they still grate. And yet, I mostly enjoy the record. The new Rogue Wave is as good as Bradley said. Other than that, we seem to be in the end-of-year lull kind of early this time. a ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2005 15:02:35 EDT From: DOUDIE@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Fiery Furnaces, REHEARSING MY CHOIR In a message dated 10/28/05 2:45:48 PM, aaron@eecs.harvard.edu writes: > The new Rogue Wave is as good as Bradley said. Also for we Europeans the new Steve Wynn ...tick...tick...tick is out & I'm hoping my copy will be waiting at my folks' place when I get there tomorrow along with some other new stuff (DCFC, Franz F +). After a quiet patch things have picked up on the new front. I can't add my support to the Magic Numbers though. Sure there are a few good tracks on the album, but it rather dies a death for me. I do love the new Supergrass, although I can't wuite figure out why. I reckon it may be an album to love rather than a set of instantly memorable and fantastic songs. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2005 16:49:34 -0400 From: "Stewart Mason" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Fiery Furnaces, REHEARSING MY CHOIR - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Blatherwick" > I can't add my support to the Magic Numbers though. This sort of album is exactly why I'm glad I subscribed to Virgin Digital: it makes it easy to check out things like this and not have to take a $12 flyer on an album it turns out I don't like. Favorite new release of the moment: FORCED MARCH by Madagascar (instrumentals led by the thoroughly excellent combo of musical saw and accordion), although I'm also quite enjoying Matt Pond PA's SEVERAL ARROWS LATER. I'm more pathetic than both of you. I don't even have a list of all the stuff I want to hear yet - a lot of it on Steven's list, a lot of other stuff, and a lot of superobvious, big-name stuff that I just plain haven't had time or money to get around to. Oh - and I have a zillion mp3s that I haven't listened to either. Ah, okay. Actually, that's fine with me, since I never get caught up anyway :-) There are always records that woulda made my top ten for a year, had I actually heard/bought them that year. It seems like the reviews are divided between "they finally matured and produced a masterpiece" and "they've mellowed out and gone soft." I'm firmly of the former opinion. There's less noise, but still a lot of weird stuff going on, perfectly mixed with hookiness. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2005 17:50:15 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Fiery Furnaces, REHEARSING MY CHOIR Jeff Norman wrote: > Oh - and I have a >zillion mp3s that I haven't listened to either. > > Let's not get on that subject. I have a pretty good system going for me. As many of you know, my main source of new tuneage is 3wk internet radio, and whenever I have it on, I have a document up I call "Songs of Interest". When a song really catches my ear, I add it to that list. If it repeatedly catches my ear, I put a star beside it for each time that happens. I don't put things in any particular order on the list (I don't have time to be that anal, but newer stuff is usually on the first page just because that's easy), but I do put songs by the same band together. When record buying time comes around, I hit the list, look for lots of stars or songs by the same band, do a bit of research, seeking out other songs on websites, samples, etc.,and that's what I try to buy. And sometimes tracking these things down isn't easy. A lot of it's pretty idie obscure. Of course, I don't just add 3wk songs to that list. If I hear something good elsewhere, it goes on there, too. It tends to run about 12-13 pages at any given time! Luckily, I heard >the three-CD set he > put out a few months ago and realized I had been >missing out. A lot of folks are missing out! I don't know at what point he fell off the radar, but Haines has been one of the most interesting and consitantly great songwriters of the past 15 years. Proof of which is the three disc set Aaron mentioned which is nearly flawless--and it's almost all outtakes, b-sides or alternate versions! The first Auteurs album, New Wave, should be a must-have kinda classic, I think, and I really love the last Auteurs album, How I Learned To Love The Bootboys which is a lost classic in part becuase it never got released in the states. Haines is seriously overdue for some recognition! There are a ton of good new releases floating around. I mentioned a few last week (and I repeat: the new album by The Coral, Invisible Invasion, is absolutely fantastic!) I've just now fallen for the charms of the latest My Morning Jacket album, Z. I never paid much attention to these guys before, but recently i've gotten curious and i've heard a lot of good stuff. Anyone heard the new Ric Ocasek? B ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2005 22:35:53 -0400 From: pking123@sympatico.ca Subject: [loud-fans] Recent remaindered CD purchases I went ramainder-hunting today in the Mississauga (Toronto) area, and got my hands on a deleted various-artists tribute to Harry Nilsson ("For the Love of Harry: Everybody Sings Nilsson"). Here, I get to hear Fred Schneider (B-52s) sing a heavy-metal version of "Lime in the Coconut". Aimee Mann is on here singing "One". Even Ringo Starr and Stevie Nicks perform together in "Lay Down Your Arms". Other bargoons was a copy of "Warm and Tender" by the Charlie Watts Quintet. Haven't heard it yet, but after hearing a Ron Wood Solo offering purchased earlier (Slide With Me), I thought I would give it a try. Also, anyone heard of a compilation called "Liss Ard (Vol 1)"? It is a benefit compilation from 1999, and features Patti Smith, David Gray, and Nick Cave, among others. It is an incredible CD, and haven't yet heard it in its entirety. Patti Smith sounds really good here. No news on how Nick Cave sounds yet. And a cheesy various artists compilation of 1988 tunes which I bought for "Reckless" (UB40/Afrika Bambaataa), and "Happy Ever After" (Julia Fordham). Both bring back memories. rest of the CD I don't really care about ("500 Miles" and "Dont' Worry Be Happy", for example). I also now have a copy of a 2003 CD from Todd Rundgren ("With a Little Help From My Friends"). He performs alongside the likes of Edgar Winter and Dweezil Zappa in various tunes. Again, the first listen sounds promising. Another various artists compilation was "Sounds of a Synthetic Future" which I purchased to hear 808 State and BT. Not bad, but it is a continuous mix. Not sure I like the idea of a continuous mix all that much, but hey, we _are_ talking synth pop. Afrika Bambaataa and Fatboy Slim are on here too. If anyone in the Toronto area wants to know where this place is, it is in Mississauga on 5170 Dixie Road north of Eglinton, way off the beaten track of "cool" record shops. While you would never go there to find the latest and greatest by your favourite artist, it is a great place for eclectic stuff, synth pop, hip-hop, Deleted stuff that was slated for Europe. I even saw one compilation that came from Rhino Records, a CD of 70s hits (VW Bug on the cover). I didn't buy it, because it was way too cheesy, with nothing that appealed to me. One bad thing about the place: None of the CDs are in any particular order. You pretty much have to hunt around for a while thru the mountains of CDs they have to see if there is anything interesting. Slightly annoying. But I guess that is all in the nature of deletes. The price of a bargoon is rummaging. Paul King ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #244 *******************************
