As you might guess, every song title begins with J. Quite an assorment here, but it flows well for the most part. 1- The Archies- Jingle Jangle ...and suddenly I'm like 10 years old again. I don't remember hearing this one, though. 2- Anton Barbeau- Jane Too Soon Pretty typical Anton, vocals constantly changing between nasal and falsetto. Cool little organ interlude. 3- Belle and Sebastian- Judy and the Dream of Horses Acoustic based twee. Pretty formulaic B&S, not a standout. 4- John Coltrane's My Favorite Things- Consonant God, I love this song. Could play it "over and over." 5- Just Like Heaven- The Cure ...and there we are, dancing on the edge of the cliff again. 6- July, July!- The Decemberists Just not into the D's. It's not bad. The vocals are pretty annoying. 7- Jailbird- The Exploding Hearts Odd mix of 50's, 60's, and 80's elements. 8- Jumpin' in the Night- The Flamin' Groovies Interesting little slide guitar bits that I wasn't expecting. 9- Jewels for Sophia- Robyn Hitchcock Punchy and bluesy that turns dreamy in the middle, kinda like an oreo. Weird and clever lyrics, of course. I like that piano weaving through the background. 10-Johnny Carson- The Beach Boys Hilarious trib. 11- Johnny, Are You Queer- Josie Cotton I never liked this song. I still don't. The vocals drive me up the wall, and the music and lyrics are just lame. 12- Jeans + Summer- The Lilac Time Watered down 60's style pop montage. The steel guitar pulls it in an interesting direction. 13- Jimmy Still Comes Around- The Loud Family This is such a good song, and I just love Scott's voice. 14- Junior's Farm- Paul McCartney & Wings This is a cool segue. ...ah, junior high. I always liked the music to this song, primarily the last section, but the lyrics are just silly. 15- Julie Ann- The Movie Stars Accordian pop. 16- July Jones- The New Pornographers The keyboard and guitar sounds are just strange. But in a good way. There's sure an awful lot going on in this song musically, though, so it seems to lack focus. The part with the reggae beat and verse is the best. I think some editing is in order to make this sound less haphazard and ADD. 17- Jumping Fences- Olivia Tremor Control I like this band. Psychedelic, sunny pop. 18- Jackie Blue- Ozark Mountain Daredevils Now, this is a strange segue. Always liked this song. ...and here we are in junior high again! Everything seemed so serious then. 19- Jealousy- Liz Phair Always liked this one. 20- Janelle Janelle- The Queers Cute, catchy pop punk. 21- Jennifer- The Rubinoos Retro beachy teeny-bopperish pop. 22- Jetfighter- The Three O'Clock I won a radio call-in contest for being the first to identify this song. Netted me a Three O'Clock 12". 23- Jesus is Just Alright- The Byrds I'd never heard this version before. 24- Just Out of Reach- The Fastbacks Such a fun band. Great retro garage sound on this one. 25- Jealous Guy (live)- Elliott Smith Where is this from? Such a heartbreakingly beautiful, tender rendition. When he sings "I didn't mean to hurt you. I'm sorry that I made you cry", well... maybe enough said. I miss you, El. Jen ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #232 *******************************
