I would've expected A LOT worse! Really? They were in the studio recording six months ago. And many of the songs on the album have been getting played live for longer than that (at least, that was my impression). It seems like a pretty normal speed for a band that isn't getting into fights with its label or whatever. I didn't know Peter Garrett was a lawyer. According to the brief profile at Trouser Press, the Speedies (who weren't officially a house band) had quite a collection of post-rock and roll resumes: "They've since grown up to become extraordinarily accomplished in various fields rhythm guitarist Greg ("Greg Zap") Crewdson is an internationally renowned art photographer and Yale professor, lead guitarist Eric ("Eric Pop") Hoffert helped create Apple's QuickTime software, drummer Allen ("Allen Zane") Hurkin-Torres is a State Supreme Court judge in New York and bassist John ("John Carl") Carlucci works on the business side of Warner Bros." What better thing to do on a rainy day when you've hurt your back, than to sit down and review old Loud-fans mixes? Sarah sent me this one in August of 2004 on an ancient scrolling type media coated with oxide particles. Overall, this mix flows well, has a bit of an urban vibe, and you just can't feel down listening to it. Well, except maybe the Marc Almond track. Side A 1- Scissor Sisters- Take Your Mama (as in, "take your mama out all night") perky, soulful fun 2- Franz Ferdinand- Take Me Out Is he jealous of your mama? 3- Gang of Four- I Love a Man in a Uniform God, I still love this song. It is impossible for me to emotionally divorce it from a particular time in my life, and that's just fine. 4- PJ Harvey- This is Love I'm still ambivalent about PJ. I really like a few of her songs. Most I can take or leave. This falls into the latter category. 5- The Darkness- Growing on Me It rocks in that sort of transitional 70s/80s way that turned into hair metal. Not my thing, and lets not even talk about the vocals here. 6- Pavement- Range Life Nothing special, and I can do without those J Mascis type sleepy and can't hit the notes vocals. 7- The Kills- Fuck the People Anyone else think the guy's voice on this sounds a bit like Mitch Easter? 8- Shalini- Downed Speaking of whom... 9- The Posies- Surrender (live) Two Cheap Trick covers in a row, and why not? (though this one hilariously starts with the American Woman intro riff) Of the two, I'll take the Shalini. This one's just too haphazard and yelled. 10- Death in Vegas (featuring Iggy Pop) - Aisha trippy, dancy techno Side B 1- Fischerspooner- Emerge cool new wave synthy stuff 2- UNKLE (featuring Ian Brown)- Be There expansive pop 3- Massive Attack- Unfinished Sympathy trip hop 4- Hybrid- Finished Symphony very... symphonic 5- X-Press 2 (featuring David Byrne)- Lazy dancy, with mid-period Talking Heads style vocals 6- Mint Royale (featuring Prince Buster)- Sexiest Man in Jamaica sample-heavy dance 7-Outkast- Hey Ya perky, catchy, cute 8- A Guy Called Gerald- Voodoo Ray dance with world music overtones 9- Sparks- We Are the Clash What is this on? I can't find it in the discog. on AllMusic. 10- Marc Almond (with Choir of the Higher Naval Engineering Academy)- Gone But Not Forgotten pretty, if a little melodramatic. lovely vocals. Sorry it took me so dang long to get this reviewed. More much belated mixes to follow... Jen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Oct 2005 18:46:00 -0400 From: "Anthony R.
