Or do you mean your argument that "the Bush administration lied about its motivation for invading Iraq"? In that case, I'm just asking you to name a Democratic politician who didn't "lie" on the same topic before the event...since, that is, you insist on pretending that WMD was our sole motivation for invading Iraq. Hey, remember how the Left (including the NY Times editorial board) used to complain that Bush was citing too many reasons for taking out Saddam? Address that, too. The Left's strategy of 2004 has aged badly, but Richie Havens has been putting out some really good records lately. He's even made "Woodstock" sound interesting again. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2005 08:40:54 -0400 From: Larry Tucker Subject: Re: [loud-fans] New Pornography On 9/29/05, Dan Sallitt wrote: > > > Now that it's been out awhile, what are people thinking of the new > > New Pornographers? I'd seen them on each tour and thought they were mediocre the first two times I saw them, but they've become a real band and not a side project. The new record bears that out. Even though Neko Case wasn't at the show and her understudy was fairly mediocre, they rocked every song including a great cover of the Cars' Just What I Needed. John Collins may be the best bass player in indie rock. Why he isn't mixed up more in their recordings is a great mystery. I'd love to hear these guys cover Lolita Nation... somebody ought to suggest it to them. I'd be shocked if Carl Newman wasn't a huge fan. It's not bad, but it seems they left out the hooks. "Spanish Techno" does nothing for me. "Use It" has one line I love (Two sips from the cup of human kindness and I'm shitfaced). Like I said, it's not bad, but it's no Electric Version. That said, I saw them earlier this month in Santa Ana on their "pre-tour" tour without Neko/Dan. I am not exaggerating when I say it was breathtakingly amazing. Even the new songs sounded good! You might think the intricate song structures might not come across in concert, but they were note-perfect. Their drummer is a sight to see as well. Do yourself a favor and go see them if they come to your town. On a releated note: Guess who I'm going to see tonight? That's right, the second phase (this time with Neko/Dan) of their tour passes by! From what I understand, Carl and Dan are drinking quite a bit, so expect some crowd-baiting and anti-US monologues. I know, it's very un-Canadian of them and doesn't jibe with the image of a pop genius, but (on bootlegs) I've heard Carl get downright nasty. Doug S. Am looking forward to seeing them live next week. Has anyone caught them on this tour and have anything interesting to report? Will it be a good show? Don't know the answer to that, but I have a related question. Is Neko actually on the tour? I've seen enough mentions of her not appearing that I'm beginning to wonder. I really hope she's there for my show. Since Destroyer is opening, I'm sure at least Dan will be there.
