No! Get yer mind outta the gutter,I mean the singin' kind! Quiet as a mouse on the Loud List...Must be time for a recording update from my opus - I Am Atomic Man!! "To The Stars" is this songs' title. It's a quick little booger that morphed into the album opener. Stacey's not convinced yet, but I'm gonna override Yoko this time.. It's 96 seconds long and very peppy. I based the format on a Jack Bruce tune called "A Letter Of Thanks" off his Harmony Row LP from 1971. Who said I wasn't up to date? There are lots of very sudden stops and starts, with a bluesy-jazzy feel. The similarity probably stops there, tho. The drum track turned out pretty well. I managed to get a bit of my personality in the program - you know, lots of drums being hit during the fills and such. Even got a pretty decent choked off cymbal crash thing going on by altering the decay. For some reason though, during the chorus, the kick drum seems to all of a sudden have these obvious louder accents which I'm not sure how they got that way, but you know me - what the hell! The guitar parts are doubled as usual - one left and one right. Lots of minor 9nth chords (I think!). They went pretty uneventful. Now the bass turned out to be a real joy! I actually play a kick ass walking bass line (not much more than a minor scale, really), but it really MOVES! This happens in the chorus, and I must say, it was a lot of fun. The usual outer space sound effects, of course, make yet another appearance. I used a combination of Korg Synth and sampled sounds for this. Ok, now the scat part. At the end of the song, there is a very jazzy instrumental break that was screaming out for a ripping, jazzy guitar solo. Didn't have to be long (short song), but had to be tasty and fast. I tried for hours and came to the obvious but disappointing conclusion that I JUST CAN'T PLAY A FAST AND TASTY LEAD BREAK OVER JAZZ CHORDS! There. I said it. Ok, now what? Let's try the keyboards. What the hell am I thinking? If I can't do it on guitar, I sure as hell can't do it on keyboards!!!! So here we are. When all else fails, put a very crazy keyboard background sound in, and.....SCAT SING! Sounds terrible, don't it? It actually worked out swell! It certainly takes the song into Squirrel Nut Zippers territory, but please keep in mind that it only lasts about 20 seconds, and the notes are there! The lyrics are sort of a here we go, we're-on-our-way type song. Not as bombastic as ELP screaming "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends", but the purpose is the same and I'm ok with it. It definitely keeps with my general theme of "this world sucks - - -sure wish I could go into outer space" message, but there a bit of double meaning in the lines that make me chuckle, and hopefully folks won't hate it. The vocals were done on first take! How 'bout that?!. Granted, it's not very adventurous in the melody dept. and it is short, but I think it's the first instance of me actually hitting all the right notes! There is a harmony part that is very much based on Clapton/Bruce. I was too lazy to try to bounce 'em down to 1 track, so some of the lead lines get a bit rushed, but overall, I'm happy eggs with it. Mixing took 2 shots. Got it right the 2nd time. There is some hiss at the beginning that I just didn't have enough hands to prevent, but what the hell. We'll call that - charm. 2 more to go. I promise. Gil __________________________________ Yahoo!
