Oops, sorry for the second post on this topic, but one other way occured to me, which is to go to sites like friendster and myspace and see if their email address is registered there. Then you can probably find out more than you ever wanted to know about them. =) Uh, more musical content...in the area of shameless self promotion, one of the bands that I think I've mentioned on this list before as one of my favorite new local discoveries is a charming folk duo called The Finches. I invited them into the tv studio for a shoot, and there is a link to a real player version of one of the songs here, if anyone is curious to check it out: http://fingeronthepulse.org/thefinches/ - -Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 10:41:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Sarah Gordon Subject: Re: [loud-fans] question > Is it possible to find out a person's name from just their email address? These days, most likely not, but if you do a google search for the email address and they've posted to an archived forum, you might get lucky. Searching on my address, for example, reveals my name. In the old days, unix servers supported a command called "finger" that allowed you to get information about a person's name and online status from their email address, but that is an old unix thing that is not commonly supported anymore. I also think you used to be able to connect directly to the mail servers on port 25 and sometimes expn would tell you the person's name (not positive on this, my memory is rusty), but that's been cracked down on due to spammers and the like trying to get email addresses from mailing lists. It also depends on the server that hosts the address. If it is webmail like gmail, you are probably stuck. If it is an email address hosted on their own domain, you can look up the domain registration records and might be able to get a name from that (though it might not be their name). Anyone else have anything to add? Anyway, to add some musical content to this post, I recently downloaded the album Micah P Hinson and The Gospel of Progress from emusic and I'm digging it. It reminds me a bit of the early Manishevitz stuff I so dearly love. http://www.emusic.com/album/10864/10864734.html - -Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 14:19:38 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] question Sarah Gordon wrote: >>Is it possible to find out a person's name from just their email address? >> >> > >These days, most likely not, but if you do a google search for the >email address and they've posted to an archived forum, you might get >lucky. That is, the person might never have used a real name anywhere online (except in registering with the ISP - but you can't get that info w/o a warrant, I believe). Most of my addresses end up with my real name attached to them eventually, and a diligent party could connect them as well, and to my various webpages. They could ultimately find my address and phone number - but then, that was possible with the ancient technology known as "the phone book" as well. Oh - and my SSN is 492-08-5572 and my WI DL is N423-2506-7730-01. Not. Yep, someone who's definitely cleverer than you has figured out all the meaning behind SSNs: http://www.greaterthings.com/Conspiracy/SSN_SocialSecurityNumber_666/ The sad part is that was the third Google hit for the search "social security number system". Jen, if it helps, and you have an IP address for mysterious person X (say, from their email) you can find out more or less where that person lives. The tool is called "traceroute". It can be cryptic, but 3/4 time I can figure out what city the person is in. mm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 14:34:06 -0700 From: Dennis Subject: [loud-fans] latest little nonmusical project Violet Grace Miner-Sacks 8/20, 1:49am, 6lbs 8oz, 18.5 inches http://www.bunchycat.com/album/violet Dennis Sacks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 17:43:29 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] latest little nonmusical project Dennis wrote: > Violet Grace Miner-Sacks > 8/20, 1:49am, 6lbs 8oz, 18.5 inches > > http://www.bunchycat.com/album/violet > > Dennis Sacks > > Awww.... congratulations!
