Thanks! Works well. Hey, is the new Bob Mould (BODY OF SONG) worth downloading from eMusic? Anybody else have any eMusic download recommendations? Lots of new stuff out there lately. I too quickly wrote it off as MODULATE II and didn't listen again until my iPod Shuffled it back into rotation. Now I'm really enjoying it. So much so that it's about the only album I've played this week. Very Sugary, and the dance grooves don't bother me as much as I'd feared. Nothing has caught my off guard lyrically yet, but the vocal mix is a bit in the back anyway. I'd put this up with COPPER BLUE as the best band album he's made since his Husker days. I did the eMusic download myself last week, and suggest the same to anyone who was once a Bob fan and has written him off of late. - --George On Aug 5, 2005, at 6:53 AM, Roger Winston wrote: > At Friday 8/5/2005 12:19 AM, Michael Mitton wrote: > >> I just found a fairly new Firefox extension that seems especially >> suited to this list. Interesting that they are touring with Destroyer - I assume this means Dan Bejar will be performing on stage with the NPs, which wasn't the case when I saw them on the last tour. Should be interesting. Also, it looks like the second MP3 ("Use It") from the new album was released a couple of weeks ago: http://www.matadorrecords.com/music/mp3s.html I'm not totally impressed on first lesson, though it does have nice piano work. Pretty often, that seems to be called "Steve Holtebeck"...;) - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2005 18:11:30 -0500 From: Jeff Subject: [loud-fans] review of swap mix Before I get to the review, a few words. Yes, the CD swap is still going on (bimonthly: you figure out which def. I mean...), and yes if you're interested in participating, you should let me know. The only requirement is that you actually produce a swap for someone - although it's always nice to post a review, or at least a track list, so's we can discuss music around here. Anyway: Steve Holtebeck sent me fine mix with amusing, advertising-derived cover art, titled _The Pop Shoppe_. From this title, and if you know Steve, you can guess the primary musical genre featured here. Here's the tracks: *Fountains of Wayne "Maureen" The Greg Kihn Band "The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em)" *Petra Haden "Relax" The Tweeds "I Need That Record" The Pillcrushers "All of the Time" *The Orange Peels "Circling the Sun" Nikki & the Corvettes "Summertime Fun" *Marshall Crenshaw "Take Me With U" *Bill Lloyd "Dial Nine" Luxury "One in a Million" Joanie Summers "Come Alive" (vintage Pepsi ad - mid-sixties?) *Paul Kelly "Roll On Summer" *Josh Rouse "Winter in the Hamptons" Chris Richards "She Belongs to Me" (not the Dylan song) *The Flamin' Groovies "Move It" Flying Color "I'm Your Shadow" *Brendan Benson "Spit it Out" Stories "Love Is in Motion" Plain White T's "All That We Needed" *Velvet Crush "Remember the Lightning" *The Raspberries "Play On" Sniff 'n the Tears "Driver's Seat" David Naughton "I'm a Pepper" (ad) Wammo "Lowriders on the Storm" Autoliner "Happy Summer Uber Alles" The Speedies "You Need Pop" - - uncredited "things go better with Coke" ad - late '50s/early '60s? kinda "Folksmen"-ish * bands I have in my collection - Some comments: I was pleased to see the Greg Kihn and Sniff 'n the Tears tracks - songs I'd nearly forgotten from their appearances in early '80s hit parades. And I'm glad to hear more of that Petra Haden thing - I'll have to pick that up, once I have any money to spend on music again. As I said above, it's impressive that even though I have tracks *by* many of these artists, there's not a single track on this album that's in my collection. This is even more surprising when a couple tracks (and not only the ones that got airplay) sound familiar...such as the Luxury track "One in a Million" and, most particularly, "Love Is in Motion" by Stories. That one's really buggin' me - I thought at first it might be on a comp. I haven't archived yet (the song's not in my database), but no... Then I looked it up at AMG - it's a Michael Brown tune (Left Banke, etc.), which sort of explains why, melodically and harmonically, it sounds kinda familiar. But that opening sequence, with the lyrics "Some day, maybe you'll understand my song" sounds just *incredibly* familiar. Is this a remake of a track I'm spacing out on, like on the Left Banke compilation? Anyway: a fine song. "Lowriders on the Storm" is, of course, a quasi-mashup (rerecorded, not sampled) of the two songs referenced in its title - but then it goes on to incorporate a whole bunch of other tracks, including "Day Tripper," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Godzilla," "Baba O'Riley," "Sweet Jane," "La Bamba," "Stand," "Louie Louie," and a few others that sounded familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it (no, not that song). Anyway, thanks to Steve for an enjoyable mix - and I'm pretty sure this is the first mix in like three years with *no* tracks I already owned. - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Aug 2005 19:15:18 -0700 From: "Steve Holtebeck" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] review of swap mix On Fri, 05 Aug 2005 16:11:30 -0700, Jeff wrote: > The Tweeds "I Need That Record" > Luxury "One in a Million" > The Speedies "You Need Pop" Speaking of Yellow Pills (as we were a while ago), these three tracks are from the latest YP compilation called PREFILL, a 2-disc set of little-known songs (even by uber-pop geeks) from the 1978-1981 era, which is a sort of golden age of powerpop (post-punk, pre-MTV). I'd never heard of the three bands above before YP PREFILL, and there are many more mostly or completely underheralded bands on there. It's kind of a NUGGETS for the Knack generation. > And I'm glad to hear more of that Petra Haden thing - I'll > have to pick that up, once I have any money to spend on music again. It's on emusic if you don't. I think it's pretty good, and would've been even better if she'd spent a few minutes googling the lyrics before singing them. "The old man didn't like our appearance" in "Tattoo" is particularly cringe-inducing for me, but Petra also massacres the lyrics to other songs. > "Love Is in Motion" by Stories. It was a top-40 hit back in 1973, so you could have heard it on the radio way back when and are only remembering it now. Anyone who wishes there were more Left Banke albums needs to pick up the Stories' ABOUT US -- the monster hit single, "Brother Louie", may be the worst song on the whole album! > "Lowriders on the Storm" is, of course, a quasi-mashup (rerecorded, > not sampled) of the two songs referenced in its title - but then it > goes on to incorporate a whole bunch of other tracks, including "Day > Tripper," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Smells Like Teen Spirit," > "Godzilla," "Baba O'Riley," "Sweet Jane," "La Bamba," "Stand," "Louie > Louie," and a few others that sounded familiar but I couldn't put my > finger on it (no, not that song). This has been a swap-disc mainstay for me lately. Also available on emusic. Anyway: for a while I thought I had it figured out, in that the opening few lines of "Love Is In Motion" are rather similar, in phrasing and general melodic contour, to "I'll Follow the Sun" (a recent nominee for "Worst Beatles Song," I think over on Fegmaniax) - but that isn't it. (And this is certainly a better song than that - although I don't hate it, mostly because it's just twisty enough harmonically and structurally to make me be curious enough to like it before I realize its cheesiness. (And around the same time, there was "Mr. Moonlight" - saved solely by some pretty fine vocal moments, and that utterly awful organ solo, after which I never fail to expect Bob Barker to announce a prize.) Oh yeah - one of these ). - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Aug 2005 02:57:22 EDT From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] Bradley's Mix Sorry it took so long Bradley but here it is. I liked the Anton album too. I didn't hear anyone I didn't like on the mix, everyone had something to offer. This is just the type of pop I like the best. So I'll just list some highlights. Statuesque. I like the way he sings, and I like the way he creates atmospheres with his synths. John Vanderslice. Good power pop. Outragious Cherry. More good power pop. Beulah. I've liied everything I've heard of this band, and this song is no exception. Smart pop that I should investagate futher.
