This time around, they plan on releasing region-specific content, meaning if you want to see each moment of each concert, you'll have to pony-up for multiple releases. Hopefully, Celine Dion won't be available on any version. - - ====== "Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals ... except the weasel." Farewell to Portland and its wonderful quality of life ... Anyway, I wanted to pass on a note that Barb Jungr, the excellent British chansonnieuse whose album of Dylan covers was one of my best musical surprises from last year, has a good op-ed on why today's pop music sounds so juvenile and sexless. http://www.spiked-online.com/Articles/0000000CAC21.htm - --------------------- Michael W. I don't watch the O.C., so I didn't know they were getting any mass media exposure. You gotta love all the wonderful alliteration in the chorus. all those s's and f's. It just makes it too fun to sing along to. I think, though, that the problem she describes (at least, the narrow parameters of the voice on massively popular songs) is largely a function of the changes in the music market. There are many, many more records these days - but a much tighter playlist. This means that for a record to be a success, it must appeal to hugely massive numbers of people - far more than was the case in the past. Add to this the increasing focus in hit-seeking on image and cheap technical tricks, and the situation could hardly be other than what Jungr describes. However, all she needs to do is dig a bit deeper down the charts - or off them - to find a whole range of distinctive singers out there. In fact, she doesn't even need to do that: conspicuous in its absence is the sound and tone of rappers who, while not being singers as such, certainly need a distinctive voice and vocal approach. And a lot of those guys (mostly men, though - although admittedly I'm not an expert in the genre) have very distinctive, full-bodied, and masculine voices. As for women: someone should play her a Sleater-Kinney record. - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Jul 2005 14:00:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Robert Toren Subject: [loud-fans] Loudfan Karen Eng in Cambridge is fine For those who remember Karen Eng (Iain&Xo are husband and infant): >Thanks for those of you who are writing to check on us.
