Larry added hugely to the Orange Peels on SQUARE, and on all of their records since (except for the parts of SO FAR that he played on), there's been a distinct lack of, for want of a better term, balls. Larry's garage rock background provided an instrumental foil for Allen's prettier tendencies, and without that balance, Allen's stuff has been floating off into the ether. (The balance on ONE HUNDRED PERCENT had been the homemade sound of the album, which made even the lighter songs sound kind of clunky, in an appealing way.) S I suppose I like Oed Ronne's guitar more, and, I'm going to pretend that I don't notice that, as usual, you're discounting me by ignoring me, even though I'm the one who brought the Peels up in the first place. Who am I to talk to YOU, anyway? I need to learn my station. I forget that I get replies from you to my posts only when you find a personality flaw or two (or more) of mine to go on about, because you hold unforgiveness towards me for something that's ancient history, and that I apologized to you for long ago. Keep on ignoring me, Stewart. I'll keep on pretending I don't notice. ;O) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Jul 2005 18:46:31 -0400 From: "Stewart Mason" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Uh-oh - do you think Blank Frank got 'im? - ----- Original Message ----- From: > I suppose I like Oed Ronne's guitar more, and, I'm going to pretend > that I > don't notice that, as usual, you're discounting me by ignoring me, > even though > I'm the one who brought the Peels up in the first place. That's because had I replied to your effusive praise of the new Orange Peels album with my own somewhat disappointed reaction to it, chances are excellent that you would have immediately posted something similar in tone to the above, claiming that I only post to disagree with you because I'm a big ol' meanyhead. It's incredibly presumptuous for you to claim that I "hold unforgiveness" towards you, not least because I genuinely have NO idea what incident you're talking about. The full extent of my feelings toward you is mild annoyance at the way you regularly put people into no-win situations like this, where we're ignoring you if we post nothing, and we hate you if we disagree with your opinions. It's tiresome, and it's the primary reason why I rarely ever post here anymore. Stewart, if you would directly respond to a post of mine maybe once every blue moon or so, instead of responding through someone else's response to a post of mine, I wouldn't have these perceptions, and make these assumptions. I may be mistaken, but the last time I remember you actually responding directly to something I posted was the Warhol "Big Shot" question what, late last year? I was so shocked, I thanked you for responding. God, am I so boring that nothing I've posted since then made you want to directly respond? (wait, don't answer that). I don't hate people for having differing opinions from my own (then I'd hate a lot of people, including most of my family and most of the people at the coffee shop I hang out at...I don't hate you at all...I actually admire your knowledge quite a lot), I don't regularly put people in "no-win" situations like this, and I don't think much of anything if people post nothing. However, I do think something if people do not respond to my posts directly. Just humor me and maybe do this once in a while? I agree with you. This is tiresome, and I apologize to you (and the list) for losing my cool, and for apparently misreading the situation. You have a lot of knowledge of music I'm interested in, and I'd like to learn from you and maybe get some lively debate from you. I've thought that you had some issues with me from days of yore. I'm pleased to know that you don't. And, please post more. Please don't not post because of me. Two, actually, as the first one was defective, though I didn't find that out until it had corrupted Windows, forcing me to reinstall. On my iPod, I would really like to be able to sort by year/artist/album, but I haven't found any way to do that. I can create a smart playlist for a given year, but then iPod lists everything by the track titles, not artists or albums. Sorting through all the tracks is a pain to begin with, nearly impossible to me since I can never remember song titles. My Googling hasn't found a solution. Am I out of luck? BTW, I use Linux, and only turned to iTunes because I wanted artwork on the iPod. Admittedly, I haven't spent much time with iTunes, but I thought it awful. To begin with, the only reason I was using it was to get the artwork onto my iPod, but iTunes doesn't fetch artwork? Since there are plenty of third-party plugins that do this, can someone explain why Apple is obviously choosing not to include this feature? Well, I could go on for a while, but I would quickly be entering rant mode, maybe already have, so I'll stop. mm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Jul 2005 22:38:58 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Uh-oh - do you think Blank Frank got 'im? Do I get uppity when I post things that NO ONE responds to? Or when someone responds via someone else's response? Sometimes we have to think about things and maybe read someone else's input before we know what, if anything, we want to say. Maybe Stewart just doesn't have anything to say in response to most of your posts, or wants to wait and see what someone else says first. Is that a crime? I think you are looking for an insult where there isn't one. In no particular order: 1. Keren Ann - Nolita Hopefully the link below will work. If so, click on her photo and be prepared to see an A-1 hot rock chick. Sorry I still call 'em chicks, but "rock woman" does not convey the mood. She is a hottie, and because of that photo, and a bit of the review of her show in the SF Chronicle, I insisted Stacey get me her cd. No problem, Stacey says. We got plenty of used ones (!) (Stacey works at Amoeba..) Not a terrific endorsement there, huh ? Stacey also knew of my smitteness with her photo, and immediately said "you just like her because she looks like Lisa" (ex-girlfriend..) I said "well sorta, but she looks more like Heidi Rodewald of The Negro Problem, to me" (Who by the way, sports one of my very favorite rock-chick looks). Anyway, her music reminds me of Julee Cruise meets Memphis era Dusty Springfield meets Serge Gainsbourg. It is laid back, haunting, and wonderful. No rockers to be heard, but that's ok. I'm all over this. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/06/18/DDGA7D9MF81.DTL&hw=keren+ann&sn=001&sc=1000 2.The Orange Peels - Circling The Sun I agree with Steve's assessment regarding the odd numbered songs as being the best. The first track is killer. It has this very cool melletron-y hook that reminds me of that song LF covered by My Bloody Valentine. The main dude (see chick explanation..) sure sounds like he's happy. And really loves summer. There is some amazing production work on this record that gives it a really dense and interesting sound. I do think he should maybe try to expand his writing, though. (yuck! that sounds so.......prissy.) I see they are playing in SF with fellow Swingers Serenade musician mate John Morman on the drums. Here are the details: > Hi friends, > John will be behind the kit for his old pals The Orange Peels next > Friday, July 8. > Come on out if you can.... > > Rickshaw Stop > 155 Fell Street at Van Ness > 8pm $12.00 > Part of the Pop Crush Festival. > Peels are headlining so let's say they'll be on 11:00ish? 3. Vic Mizzy - The Ghost And Mr. Chicken (soundtrack) You must love the music for The Addams Family?! This is along the same lines, but with a bit less harpsichord. A very great cd! Can't think of any others, right now except for a remastered reissue of Gentle Giant's - The Power And The Glory, but we won't go there.
