I had some positive feelings about Head Of Femur from their album (though either I have a short attention span for their music or the good stuff is ALL right at the beginning), but seeing them play kind of turned me off. The band looked like bored kids slumming at a rock show, and the singer delivered every line with a Barry Manilow crescendo-of-emotion expression on his face. If he'd toned it down slightly I might have bought it (it's not like I could understand every word-- maybe there was something profound and affecting in there); as it was, I felt irritated. a ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jun 2005 15:48:36 EDT From: A52boy@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] Lawrence, what happened? I've given Go-Kart Mozart's TEARING UP THE ALBUM CHART a fair chance. Five years on, I hoped for a rebound by Lawrence, as INSTANT WIGWAM & IGLOO MIXTURE was quite disappointing. This new record is a nice bookend of suckiness to go with the first. How did we get from FOREVER BREATHES THE LONELY WORD or THE STRANGE IDOLS PATTERN to this crap? It sounds like Lawrence getting drunk at a karaoke bar. The lyrics suck, his vocals are barely more than talk-sing, the annoying Casiotoneish synths...no wonder he's puts classifieds on his record for a good guitarist. He needs to post a classified for the return of his lost muse. Most people get better as they get older, I think. Not him. How sad. It's like Peter Hook years back, where he purposely quit carrying the melody on his bass, much to the annoyance of his fans...is Lawrence trying not to be Felty or Denimy on purpose? That's not hip anymore? I need the poetic lyrics, the atmospheric guitars, the actual singing, which he's quite capable of. Oh well, at least he's got a damned fine past to be proud of. - --Mark np: some Haydn symphonies ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #159 *******************************
